Lula Elizabeth (Massie) Jones

Lula was born in Evansville, Indiana September 6, 1934, moved to Knoxville, TN at the age of 12. Lula was a member of Meridian Baptist Church. She was in the first graduating class of South High School in 1952 and was class secretary and awarded the DAR award for good citizenship.

After completing course work at Cooper's Institute of Business, she was employed as secretary to Assistant Pastor, First Baptist Church, Knoxville and then as secretary and youth director at Arlington Baptist Church, Knoxville.

Lula was employed in the Knox County School Central Office as secretary to the Assistant Superintendent Mildred Patterson. After completing a degree from the University of TN, she received a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education., Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction with Reading Specialist endorsement. Lula taught in several reading programs and as a classroom teacher for 31 years in Knox County. She was a member of several professional and educational organizations.

Lula loved reading, music and was an accomplished ballroom dancer, having won several awards in competitions. She and her late husband, Robert, was also a dancer, taught several ballroom dance classes in the area.

Preceded in death by parents, William and Irene Massie; husband, Robert L. Jones; sister, Caroline Massie Peeples and brother, Bill Massie.

Survived by sister, Betty Jane Massie; nephews, Andrew and Tim (Amy) Massie; Mike Peeples; niece, Kimberly Doward; several great nieces; nephews. She also leaves behind her special long-time friend, Joyce Nelson, whose friendship was a constant source of love and support over the years.

Family and friends will gather for a visitation Sunday, July 27, 2025, from 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM in the parlors of Berry Funeral Home, 3704 Chapman Hwy, Knoxville, TN 37920. Family will meet Monday, July 28, 2025, at Woodlawn Cemetery, 4500 Woodlawn Pike, Knoxville, TN 37920 for an 11:00 AM Graveside Service officiated by Rev. Dana Fachman.
