Norma Lewis

LEWIS, NORMA SUE – age 85, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 18, 2017 at Physician’s Regional Medical Center (formerly St. Mary’s) in Knoxville, Tennessee. She was born in Detroit, Michigan, but her family moved back “home” to Powder Springs, Tennessee when she was very young. Some of her fondest memories as a toddler were of attending Johnson’s Chapel Freewill Baptist Church with her grandparents, Mammy and Pappy Kitts. At age four, her family moved to the Oakwood community in Knoxville, and at age 6 they moved to Inskip where she lived for the rest of her life. She was a graduate of Knoxville Central High School, class of 1950, and was a long time member of Inskip Baptist Church where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday School for years. She was an avid reader and student of the Bible, a prolific vegetable gardener, and there was never a home building project too big for her. In 1988 she retired from TVA where she worked as a draftsman in the Mechanical Engineering and Design Branch. She then worked in the church library for years before going back to work doing layouts for a locally published magazine. After retiring again, she threw herself into genealogical research and went on to publish several books about her family. Preceded in death by parents, Corbin Adron Lewis and Frances Effert Kitts Lewis; brother, Shields Odell Lewis; niece, Teresa Lewis LeBruno. Survived by brother and his wife, Robert Eugene Lewis and Jo Ann Webb Lewis; sister-in-law, Wilma Jordan Lewis; nieces, Sheila Lewis Sternberg and Pamela Lewis Haddix and their husbands; nephews, Rev. Ronald E. Lewis and Dr. Richard L. Lewis and their wives; and numerous cousins, great and great-great nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be made to Johnson’s Chapel Freewill Baptist Church, 110 Kitts Dr, Washburn, TN 37888. A memorial service will be held at 3 PM on Sunday, July 9, 2017 at Johnson’s Chapel, with Rev. Greg Hurst officiating. Friends and family may leave their condolences at www.berryhighlandwest.com
