Born on February 9, 1965, and raised in Knoxville, Tonya graduated from West High School and went on to attend the University of Tennessee and Tennessee Technological University. She married Gregory Capps on September 4, 1987, and they were blessed with two daughters during their nearly 38 years of marriage.
Tonya’s life was centered around her faith. She was baptized into Christ and faithfully served as a member of the Lord’s church for more than 40 years. A devoted Bible student and teacher, she shared her knowledge and love of Scripture through teaching countless children’s and ladies’ classes. Her impeccable character, compassion, and quiet strength were an example to all who knew her.
Tonya embraced her role as a wife, mother, grandmother, and daughter with great devotion. She supported Greg through his military service, his work as an evangelist and church elder, and his secular career at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. She created a warm and nurturing home, modeling the grace and wisdom of the woman described in Proverbs 31. In January, she joyfully began in her newest role as “Nana” to her grandson, Samson.
She was a skilled quilter, scrapbooker, and card maker, blessing family and friends with handmade treasures and thoughtful notes. Tonya loved hiking and the beauty of nature. She also loved drinking coffee, enjoyed collecting mugs, cherished her Celtic heritage, and adored her dog, Bailey. Most of all, Tonya will be remembered for her poise, compassion, thoughtfulness, and unwavering spiritual focus.
She is survived by her devoted husband Gregory; her mother Patricia; her daughters Makenzi (Jordan) and Sabrina (Samuel); and her grandson Samson. She is preceded in death by her father Bobby and stepfather Steve.
A visitation for Tonya will be held Saturday, August 30, 2025 from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Berry Highland West, 9913 Sherrill Blvd, Knoxville, TN 37932. The funeral service will begin at 2:00 PM, with a graveside service to follow.
