Velma Marie Haynes, a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on March 25, 2026, at the age of 96. A woman of grace and enduring strength, Velma spent her final twelve years as a resident of Loudon, Tennessee.
Velma was born on December 28, 1929, in Monroe, Michigan, to the late Frank and Odessa Nickels. She was the older sister to Alma (deceased), Kathryn (deceased), Shirley and Rosemary (“Pug”). Growing up in the heart of the Great Depression and witnessing nearly a century of history, she developed a resilience and warmth that became the foundation of her family.
She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Claude and her daughter, Linda Hayes.
Velma’s legacy of love and family continues through her surviving children: Carol Sexton, Claudia Michalski, Rhonda Colberg, and Howard William Haynes. She was the proud matriarch to 12 grandchildren, 2 step-granddaughters and two growing generations of numerous great- and great great-grandchildren, all of whom she adored.
Those who knew Velma will remember her for her steady presence and the quiet wisdom she shared with those around her. Her 96 years were a testament to the importance of family, faith, and a life well-lived.
