Dr. William Allen Mashbern (September 15, 1947) passed away in Maryville, TN on August 1, 2018. Allen leaves behind a wife, Jeanie Ann (Cogdill) Mashbern; one daughter, Tina (Mashbern) Cowsert (John Cowsert); one grandson, Matthew John Cowsert, and one granddaughter, Anna Elizabeth (Annabeth) Cowsert; his three sisters, Kathy (Mashbern) Hancock (Edd Hancock), Jeanni (Mashbern) Highlander (Gil Highlander), Leah (Mashbern) Hunsucker (Scott Hunsucker) and many cousins, nephews, and nieces.
Allen is preceded in death by his parents, Herschel Troy and Evelyn Irene (Norton) Mashbern.
Allen was a 1964 graduate of Lenoir City High School. He graduated from Carson-Newman College in 1969 and later earned two master's degrees; one from the University of Memphis and a second master's and a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY. He served as Minister of Music and Youth at churches in Pensacola, FL, Memphis, TN, Frankfort, KY, and Minister of Music and Church Music Services at Illinois Baptist State Association in Springfield, IL for 20 years.
Allen loved Jesus with all his heart. He enjoyed fly fishing, action/adventure movies, J.R.R. Tolkien novels, and speaker systems with loud subwoofers and a booming bass. With four degrees in music and perfect pitch, he played every instrument, but piano was his favorite. Allen edited hymns for the Southern Baptist Hymnal. Music filled his life with joy. He spent his life sharing his love of music and Jesus with others. Allen loved his family more than anything. He was a godly man who will be greatly missed; yet his impact on others will live on forever.
Visitation will be Saturday, August 4, 2018 from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm at Berry Funeral Home, 3704 Chapman Highway, Knoxville, TN. A service will follow at 3:00 pm. with Dr. Julian Suggs officiating.
