Jack Eugene Smallwood

Jack Eugene Smallwood, 85, passed away on July 6th, 2018 at Community Howard Regional Hospital. Jack was born to Robert and Iva (Wilson) Smallwood on July 26th, 1932 in Kokomo. Jack married his wife of 67 years, Margaret E. Hill, on June 29th, 1951 in Kokomo. Jack served our country in the United States Navy from 1952 to 1956. In Yorktown, Virginia, Jack attended the U.S. Naval Schools Mine Warfare, completing his schooling on October 31st, 1952. Afterwards, Jack went to the Naval Mine Depot in Warrick, Virginia until 1955. Jack served on the U.S.S. Lake Champlain (CVA-39) in the 6th Fleet, from September 1955 to April 1956. He was a reservist for 2 years after. Jack was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Navy Occupation Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. After serving in the Navy, Jack went on to work at Montgomery Ward in retail from 1960 to 1967, then went on to work in various assignments leading up to assistant manager at Sears and Roebuck, retiring in 1990. Jack was a member of the Elks Lodge. He was a past member of Fairlawn United Brethren Church and enjoyed singing in the church choir. Jack greatly enjoyed powerboating from 1970 to 2001 with friends and family. He was a member of the Coast Guard in Marion, Indiana assisting with search and rescue missions, and helping people in distress. He thoroughly enjoyed his family and helping with them projects, such as working on cars. Jack was a talented auto mechanic. Jack loved to spend time with his children and grandchildren, watching sports, and would attend as many of his grandchildren's events as he could. Jack was well known within the community and had many friends. They will miss him dearly. Jack leaves behind his wife, Margaret Smallwood; children Celeste (Bruce) Sumner and Brad (Tami) Smallwood; 4 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild; 3 step-grandchildren; 11 step-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews Jack is preceded in passing by his parents; 6 sisters Eileen (Lee) Tipett, Winifred (John) Poynter, Betty (Chester) Archer, Mary (Frank) Pierce, Annamay (Jack) Crone, and Roberta (Marvin) Bagwell. Margaret and family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at North Woods Village Memory Care Unit for their interest and care during Jack's short stay. Also to the staff in Community Howard Regional Hospital's E.R. and P.C.U. for their compassion with Jack and his family. The family would like to thank their neighbors and community for their love and support. Friends and family may call from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Thursday, July 12th at Ellers Mortuary Webster Street Chapel, with funeral service following at 1:00 PM. Pastor Jeff Evans will officiate, with eulogy by Jack's nephew, Robert Poynter. Jack will be laid to rest at Crown Point Cemetery, following the funeral.
