Fred Powell (1938–2026), a man defined by his creativity, kindness, patience, and unwavering faith, "graduated home" to be with his Lord and Savior on May 4, 2026. Born in March 1938, in Lincoln, Nebraska, Fred was an only child with a lifelong passion for art. He earned his degree in Architecture from the University of Nebraska in 1961, and was a proud Husker through and through,
After enlisting and serving in the Army National Guard, Fred said goodbye to the cold and snow of Nebraska and hello to sunny California in Hollywood. It was there in 1964 that he met his love, Maryann Gage and married in 1966. After briefly moving to San Diego where they experienced the “beach life” in Pacific Beach, they embarked on an adventure to Honolulu, Hawaii in 1967, which included not only a new job opportunity but their first baby girl, Mindy, joining the family in 1968. The end of 1969 brought the Powell family back to San Diego, where in 1970 another sweet girl named Alison joined the family. Over the years the family grew with sons-in-laws and 6 grandchildren. Now 4 of the 6 grandchildren are married and Fred - called Papa by his grandkids, also got to meet and love on 2 great-grandsons! Fred and Maryann shared nearly 58 years of marriage before her passing in September 2014.
Fred spent the majority of his career as a dedicated architect with his own business in Old Town San Diego, and later for General Dynamics and then Kevin Rugee Architecture. Fred and Maryann both loved the Lord and served Him faithfully over the years first at Hollywood Presbyterian, and later in San Diego at Scott Memorial Baptist and Clairemont Emmanuel. Fred was known as one of the most patient and gentle souls, and was quick to laugh. His legacy is a lasting impact on everyone he met through his deep love for Jesus and his genuine care for others. In his final years he was cared for by his daughters and the wonderful staff at Mount Miguel Covenant Village, where he was loved by all.
We will miss him dearly and rejoice in the knowledge that Fred and Maryann are having a heavenly reunion and he is now in his eternal home - free from sorrow, tears and pain. You fought the good fight, kept the faith, and finished the race. We know you are dancing with Jesus, as we look forward to the hope of heaven we say: “See you soon Dad. We love you!”
