Modesta Simental passed away at home on August 12, 2021 at the age of 80. She and her twin Carlota were born to Francisco and Rosa M. (Cruz) Vazquez on November 4, 1940 in the state of Jalisco Mexico. Her twin would later pass in infancy. Modesta was the youngest of thirteen, five brothers and seven sisters. They shared a strong familial bond and made many great memories for all their families to cherish.
In August of 1962 she married Cesar Simental. They soon immigrated to the US, making their home in San Diego (Sherman Heights), eventually moving to Chula Vista in 1974. Modesta was a meticulous homemaker (mother of five children) and in the early 80’s thru 90’s was a working mom; employed at the Disabled American Veterans thrift store in Chula Vista.
Modesta is survived by her husband Cesar and her five children: Cesar Jr., Angelica Lacarra, Estella (Rod Roberts) Simental, Lillian (Chris) Overson and David (Carla) Simental; her six grandchildren: Angelica’s sons, Giovanni (Micaela) of Eastlake and Xairo (Yasmin) of Santee, Estella’s daughters, Alyssa (Alex) Covarrubias of Chula Vista and Kayla of Chula Vista, David’s son Elias and daughter Amaia. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their families.
Modesta (Mode) as her family and friends called her, was a devout Catholic and spiritual person. Her faith brought her great joy, peace and resolve during her lifelong health battles. She had a spirited personality and was often sought after by her family and friends for her truthful advice and guidance. A few of her favorite things were Starbucks (caramel macchiato), going out for lunch on Saturdays, and any game of chance. She especially enjoyed her birthday trips to play her luck at the casino slots; the loteria (bingo) games among family members were legendary for all sorts of high jinks and friendly competition. Modesta will be dearly missed by all who loved her. May she rest in God’s grace.
