Robert Gerald McLean, 80, passed away April 17th, 2025. Bob, as he was known, was born October 15th, 1944 in San Diego to Alma Rieger and William McLean. He had three younger sisters Linda, Patty, and Betty.
Bob grew up in California and graduated from C.K. McClatchey High School in Sacramento in 1962. That year he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served honorably in Vietnam as a member of the 9th Marine Expeditionary Brigade (9th MEB, 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines), which landed in Da Nang in March 1965 as the first U.S. ground combat troops in the country. He and his fellow Marines were photographed by LIFE magazine (July 2, 1965) evacuating an injured man during that time (might take this statement out if Aunt Jean chooses not to use photograph). After he was discharged in 1966, he went to work for the California Highway Patrol, spending most of his career in San Diego County. He retired after thirty-four wonderful years with the CHP. In retirement Bob liked to fish, hunt, golf, and work in his yard. He was especially proud of his rose garden. He was an enthusiastic fan of the San Diego State Aztecs and the Padres.
Bob is survived by his loving wife Jean (Mitchell) of 55 years, son Steven Noyes, daughter-in-law Hannelore, granddaughter Natalie, and great-grandsons Skyler, and Jordan. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Betty. Family was everything to Bob. He was especially close to his son Steve. He also enjoyed spending time with his sister Linda and her family in Arizona, his sister Patty and her family in Sacramento, and his sister-in-law Patty’s family in Idaho.
Bob was a good man; he was loved very much and forever will be held close in our hearts.
