Born in Tallapoosa County, Alabama to Annie Bell Banks and Ronald Dawthy Jackson, Doris Bettina Carden was raised by her grandparents on a farm in Alabama during the Great Depression while her mother went to work in the cotton mills. She recalled the hard work of farm life along with fond memories of keeping up with her three brothers as they raced through fields and climbed trees and of her grandmother.
As a teenager, she moved to LaGrange and graduated from LaGrange High School. Soon afterwards, she met and married Lewis Carden. While Lewis travelled for his job in sheet metal, Tina ran their household and raised four children, Marcia, James, Cynthia, and Karen. In October 1965, the family moved to Columbus, Georgia. After her children were grown, Tina began exploring her many interests and talents. In addition to sewing for the family, she took up all manner of needlework and became an award-winning bowler, traveling to national competitions. An accomplished cook, she experimented with international cuisines. She welcomed all to her table and home. She loved flowers and was a natural at gardening. Roses, peonies, daylilies, irises, azaleas, camellias, dogwoods, orchids, and clippings of all sorts flourished in her home and garden.
Tina was predeceased by her husband Lewis, brothers Lee and Aubrey Jackson, stepsister Martha Smith Anderson Martin, grandsons Jeremy Robert Carden Sewell and Michael John Foster. She is survived by her children Marcia Foster, Cynthia Tomblin, James Carden (Michelle), and Karen Samples (Roy); grandchildren Jennifer (Jon), Amber (Ashley), Amanda (Eddie), Shamri, Claire; and numerous step grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and step great-great grandchildren.
She was of the silent generation, as they call it, and we will remember her for her steady and quiet resolve, but also for her keen perception and unassuming brilliance, kindness, love of nature, welcoming and generous spirit, commitment to and love for her family, and the pure joy of her smile.
