Franklin was born February 2, 1936 to George Wesley and Thelma Payton Rogers. He and his two younger brothers, Kenneth and G.W., were raised in Heard County, Georgia, surrounded by a large, loving family. He was a graduate of Heard County High School and Southern Technical Institute. He began his career with the Georgia Department of Transportation as a civil engineer in 1956 in LaGrange. In 1972 he met his wife of forty years, Carole, whom he married the next year. Shortly thereafter he began building the home he shared with her for the rest of his life; it was finished right before the birth of his daughter, Caroline. His son, Payton, was born two years later. After 34 years of dedicated service, he retired from the DOT as Area Engineer in 1989 and started Rogers Construction. He was a member of First Baptist Church on the Square where he served as a deacon. He traveled with “Carpenters for Christ” to build a church in Brazil, a trip that had a major impact on his life. In his retirement years he took great joy in renovating the lake house his family has enjoyed for almost thirty years, and delighted in every minute he spent with his granddaughters Libby and Lillian, the lights of his life.
Franklin is survived by his wife, Carole, their daughter, Caroline Lombard and her husband, Will, of Atlanta, their son, Payton Rogers and his wife, Courtney, of Jacksonville, Florida; his son Benjamin Rogers, Jr. and his daughter Jennifer Bell, both of LaGrange; grandchildren, Elizabeth “Libby” Lombard, Lillian Rogers, Elizabeth Talley Canfield, and Kathleen Talley; his brother Kenneth Rogers and his wife Jean, his brother G.W. and his wife Deborah; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Thursday, March 14, 2013 at First Baptist Church on the Square with Dr. Paul Baxter and Reverend Paul Blair officiating. A private burial will be in Shadowlawn Cemetery.
