

Jane was born on September 20, 1939 in Mt. Hope, AL to the late Eldred and Gladys Elkins.
She graduated from Florence State (now University of North Alabama) where she met her husband of almost 59 years, Gary Stephens, and graduated with a Business degree.
After they married, Jane was a secretary to military officials in Pine Bluff, Arkansas where her husband was serving in the Army, and later a High School Business teacher in Decatur, AL before becoming a stay at home mother to Lori.
Jane and her husband moved to LaGrange, GA in 1977 for his job with Milliken.
She threw herself into volunteer work with First United Methodist Church and the community. Jane was a faithful and dedicated volunteer with the Hospital and Florence Hand Home for over 45 years and won Volunteer of the Year for the State of GA Nursing Home Association.
At First United Methodist, Jane was actively involved in her Sunday School class and has held positions throughout the years on the Administrative Board, Altar Guild, Women’s Circle, Director of Weddings and Chaired Church Visionary Groups as well as other committees.
Jane possessed a respectful, caring and welcoming nature and has always been a champion of the underdog. She had a huge and warm heart and her compassion and genuine care for others truly set her apart.
Jane was a long standing member of the LaGrange Woman’s Club and Pine Needle Garden Club and enjoyed all the activities and friendships they brought.
She had a passion for playing bridge with friends and has belonged in several clubs throughout the years, including recent days.
The deep friendships she made in her Soul Connection Group were very meaningful and impactful for her.
Jane resided at Vernon Woods, and was preceded in death by her parents, husband Gary Stephens, brother Billy Elkins, sister Sarah Elkins Martin and nephew Andy Elkins.
She is survived by her daughter Lori Stephens Taylor (Tim) Auburn AL, grandson Landon Taylor (Opelika, AL), granddaughter Reagan Taylor (Madison, AL), three nieces and many great nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 10-11 am on Saturday, January 10th in the sanctuary of First United Methodist with a Celebration of Life Service to follow at 11 am officiated by the Reverend Dr. Thomas Martin.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to First United Methodist Church, 401 Broad St, LaGrange, GA 30240 or Bellevue, 204 Ben Hill St, LaGrange, GA 30240.
