Mrs. Shelton was born in Troup County in 1916 and was a graduate of Rosemont School. She was always proud that her son and her 2 grandchildren attended Rosemont Elementary.
Mrs. Shelton, known as “Rete” by her family and friends, married Woodrow Wilson Shelton in 1932. Woodrow was born in Meriwether County but lived most of his life in Troup County. “Rete” and Woodrow adopted a son in 1946 and they lived most of their 51 years together within a few hundred yards of where she was born.
Mrs. Shelton worked for JC Penny’s for 25 years and later worked for Piece Goods for another 10 years before retiring at age 80. She continued to drive her red pick-up truck until age 87.
Mrs. Shelton was a member of County Line Baptist Church where she taught children’s church in to her 70’s. There is no way to calculate how many young people she introduced to Jesus. She was a Christian Soldier who taught children to be good stewards of God’s money, to tithe, and to walk the paths of Jesus and spread the Word. She had a tremendous love for children and animals.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Jan Shelton of Fort Myers, FL; two grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Graveside funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Friday, April 15, 2011 in Shadowlawn Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to your church’s youth ministry or to a children’s charity. Flowers wilt and die but an investment in children is eternal.
Arrangements are by Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 1010 Mooty Bridge Road, LaGrange, GA 30240 (706) 884-8636 www.shlagrange.com
