

Mrs. Smith was born February 26, 1915 in LaGrange, GA. She was the daughter of the late Colonel and Nellie Mae Thompson Payne and the wife of the late Robert Woodrow Smith, Sr.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of LaGrange for 88 years. She taught Sunday school and was a member of the United Methodist Women. She was a member of the Mary Will Thompson Sunday School Class and was also a member of the Altar Guild.
During World War II, she was a secretary with the Army/Air Force in Orlando, Fl., and later worked for the Social Security Administration. She was a long term secretary for the Troup County unit of the American Heart Association, was a charter member of the Pink Ladies of the West Georgia Medical Center, and was also on the board of Camp Viola.
Survivors include one son, Robert Woodrow Smith, Jr. and daughter-in-law Joyce Darden Smith. Brother John Wallace Payne and sister-in-law Helen Payne of Savannah, GA. Brother James Howard Payne of Roopville. Grandchildren are, Robin and John Roberts of LaGrange, GA. and Mary Manthey of Peachtree City, GA. Great-grandchildren are, Mary Emma and Sarah Grace Roberts of LaGrange, GA and Maguire Patrick Manthey of Peachtree City, GA.
She was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters: Alfred Emory Payne, William H. Payne, Lister Payne, Thomas Payne, and Agnes Payne
The family will gather at the funeral home to receive friends on Sunday afternoon, September 30th, from 3 to 5 PM. A private burial will be held in Shadowlawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be to First United Methodist Church of LaGrange, The American Heart Association, or West Georgia Hospice in memory of Virginia Payne Smith.
