He married the love of his life Yvonne Eagleson on December 14, 1963 and they resided in Cameron, LA until Hurricane Rita in 2005 and moved to Grand Lake, LA. They both enjoyed traveling, music, dancing and their camp in Little Chenier on weekends.
As a young man, Wendell played guitar in a popular band called "The Twisters". He was drafted in the U.S. Army in 1967 and was stationed in Germany for 2 years. He worked most of his life in the oilfield as a crane and heavy equipment operator, and also a trapper with his father. He began cutting lawns for people in his community which eventually led to his own self employed grass cutting business until his retirement in 2012.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Yvonne Mhire, parents, sister Vivian Alice Mayard and brother in law Dudley" Dusty" Mayard.
Those left to cherish his memory are his three nephews Gary Mayard (Gloria), Blayne Mayard (Saraphia) and Myron Mayard (Ronda) and nieces and nephews.
The family will welcome friends for visitation Thursday, May 9 2024 from 9 am until time of funeral service at 1pm. Interment will follow at Grandlake-Sweetlake Community Cemetery.
The family would like to give special thanks to the staff at Jennings VA Nursing Home where he has resided since January 2024 and the staff at Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center for their special care during this difficult time.
