Wilbert Joseph (Blackie) LeDee, 91 of Lake Charles, LA passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Thursday, October 15, 2020. Blackie was born on March 6, 1929 in Lawtell, LA. He resided in Lake Charles the majority of his adult life. Blackie was owner/operator of Blackie’s Paint and Body Shop for over 60 years until his retirement.
Blackie was a master of his craft. His custom work appeared in three automotive magazines. His custom 1932 Ford Pickup Truck appeared in “StreetScene” and “Rod Action” magazine. His customized Rambler Marlin appearing in “Motor Trend” magazine after winning a National Custom Car Championship. His work expertise and craftsmanship garnered recognition far and wide. His hobbies were many including, motorcycle and car racing, bowling and roller skating. Blackie also belonged to the “Zodiacs” Motorcycle Club. He and his wife Elva belonged to a “Bid Whist” card club. They very much enjoyed attending “formal” social events with friends. Over the years, Blackie amassed over 100 trophies representing all of his passions.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his daughter Lilly LeDee Fontenot and husband Alphonse of Lake Charles, two grandchildren; Michael A. Fontenot of Lake Charles and Michelle Fontenot Young (Ricardo) of Bethesda, Maryland, as well as four great-grandsons; Matthew A. Fontenot, Maison T. Fontenot, Colson B. Fontenot and Landon M. Fontenot. He also leaves behind six brothers; Moses LeDee, David LeDee, Jacob LeDee, Tim LeDee, Willard LeDee and Elbert Lee Guillory and three sisters, Leora Wieloch, Leona Gallow and Lorella Marshall.
He was welcomed into Heaven by his wife of 68 years, Elva G. LeDee; father, Ozema LeDee; biological mother Lilly Durosseau LeDee whose life was lost in a car accident at a young age, and stepmother Francis Papillion (Nan) LeDee. He was also preceded in death by three brothers; Hebert, John and Marshall LeDee.
The family will welcome friends on Saturday, October 24, 2020 at Hixson of Lake Charles beginning at 10am until time of service. A Rosary will begin at 1pm with funeral service to follow beginning at 2pm. Following the wishes of Blackie he will be cremated. A private interment will be held at a later date at Consolata Cemetary, where he will join his loving wife Elva.
CDC Covid 19 Guidelines will be followed. All attendees must wear a mask, should you not have one a mask will be provided for you. Social distancing will be followed as well.
