Born in Detroit, MI to Albert and Barbara Kunzmann, he spent most of his childhood summers in Lake Worth. He moved there permanently in 1981 after being laid off from the Chrysler Motor Plant and began to enjoy a perfect Florida lifestyle - fishing, diving, motorcycling and legendary poolside keg parties.
In 1983 he suffered severe injuries in a near-fatal car crash. After working for months to rehabilitate himself and walk again, he embarked upon an adventurous 4-month, 12,000 mile cross-country motorcycle journey to watch the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
While recuperating from the 1983 accident he had met the love of his life at Harry’s Bar and they married in 1988. Then the real fun began as they traveled the world together. Ireland, Belgium, Morocco, Bora Bora and Iceland were favorites, but the best was Australia - twice! The first time in trains, planes and automobiles, the second time on a rented Harley. Damon took that bike on a dusty, dirty joyride through the Outback, something he never would have done on his own beloved Electraglide.
To pay for all these travels, Damon worked the past 26 years for Palm Beach County as an FD & O Electrician. Ask his colleagues and they will tell you he really knew how to “light up” a room. His gift of gab was notorious and meant nearly every story was going to be a long one. After he kissed the Blarney Stone, it only got better.
Damon was a wonderful man, kind and patient, with a big laugh and a huge heart. He loved his family, including the little furry ones, very dearly.
left behind to miss him terribly are his wife of 34 years, Dorothy McKay, his brothers Brendan and Quinten (Eileen), sisters Meaghan (Arnie), Lisa (Tim), and Lyda (Bill).
The family is planning a “Bon Voyage” party for this terrific guy and they ask that in lieu of flowers, to celebrate Damon’s life, you just get your motor runnin’ and head out on the highway.
