

Richard Paul Wille, age 97, passed away on Sunday, April 5, 2026 with his wife Sherry (Sharon) by his side. A respected law enforcement leader and devoted family man, Richard leaves behind a legacy of service, integrity, and dedication to his community.
He was born on January 15, 1929, in Port Huron, Michigan, to Arthur Wille and Margaret VanThournout. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Arthur, and his sisters Mary and Bertha.
Richard proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps beginning in 1946, where he spent two years in service. Following his military service, he pursued a career in law enforcement, graduating from the Police Academy at Michigan State in 1955. He began his career as a Deputy with St. Clair County, Michigan.
In 1961, Richard moved to Florida and joined the North Palm Beach Police Department as a police officer. Through hard work and leadership, he rose through the ranks to become Chief of Police. He continued his education while working, earning his Associate degree from Palm Beach Junior College in May 1971.
In 1976, Richard was elected Sheriff of Palm Beach County, taking office in January 1977. He served for more than 19 years, making him the second longest-serving Sheriff in the county’s history. During his tenure, he oversaw significant growth within the agency, expanding it to over 2,000 employees. He was instrumental in establishing the K-9 unit, implementing take-home vehicles for deputies, and advancing professionalism in law enforcement through national accreditation efforts. He also helped form the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), influencing standards for agencies across the country.
Richard and Sherry (Sharon) Wille married in 1983. Together they shared a large and loving blended family. He was preceded in death by his son Roger Wille and daughter Deborah Mattino. He is survived by his children Danny Wille, Richard Wille, Vicki Katz, Larry Wille, Donna Harris, and Danielle Glenn. He also leaves behind many grandchildren and great grandchildren and extended family members, and friends who will miss him dearly.
Sheriff Richard P. Wille will be remembered by all for his ethical and professional leadership, his unwavering commitment to public service, and the lasting impact he made on the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, his community, and his contribution to the profession of law enforcement in this county.
Celebration of Life Services will be held at Christ Fellowship Church, 9905 Southern Blvd, Royal Palm Beach, FL 33411 on Wednesday April 22, 2026 at 10am.
