Gary Dean Imel “The Grizz” was born to Eldon and Esther (Schlegel) Imel on August 17, 1946, in Rocky Ford, CO. He is survived by his three sisters, LaVone Adams, Patricia Imel and Norma Stallsworth. After graduating from Canon City High School in 1965, he enlisted with the United States Airforce and served four years and then returned to Colorado to continue his higher education at Adams State College for one year and later earned his associates degree from Red Rocks Community College. On July 24, 1971, he married Christina Ostrega and together they built a family made up of 3 daughters, three sons-in-law and ten grandchildren: Brynda and John Skelton-Geoffrey, Morrigan and Cody, Cindy and Kevin Hoff- Michael, Jacob and Miranda, and Jenny and Matt Schartz- Kenzie, Madi, Cooper and Reese.
Gary was known for his incredible work ethic. Not only did he spend 27 years with the Mountain Bell, US West, and Qwest telecommunications company, but also spent many years running his own companies, Grizzly Supervac and Yipes Stripes.
Gary’s love of life developed from all his experiences and the people he met along the way. He spent countless hours donating his time and knowledge with Junior Achievement, Ducks Unlimited, Colorado Division of Wildlife, Boy Scouts of America, and of course playing Santa. He absolutely loved engaging in school activities for his kids and their friends; ranging from playing Bubba in the elementary school jail to being suspended from a few games for maybe displaying a little too much passion for what he thought was fair! Some activities that he enjoyed were listening to music, singing karaoke, playing Texas Hold ‘em, and watching a variety of different shows or sporting events on television. Those who knew him will always remember seeing his eyes light up when he told stories of his adventures while hunting and fishing all over the United States and overseas. But the number one thing that everyone is sure to remember are the ridiculously corny jokes he would tell anyone and everyone he ever met!
The massive presence this man had on so many lives is immeasurable. Gary will be greatly missed by all those who had the chance to meet him. His family invites you to help celebrate his life by joining his services on Thursday October 21, 2021 at Fort Logan National Cemetery at 11:00 am (staging area A) followed by a reception to share a meal and memories at VFW Post 5061 starting at 11:30 am.
In lieu of flowers please consider donating to Ducks Unlimited to help continue to support an organization Gary was passionate about.
