Marta was born on June 12, 1953, in Havana, Cuba, to Marta and Alfredo Dominguez. In 1960, her family fled Cuba when Castro took over, seeking a new life in the United States. They settled in Miami, Florida, where they built a life in the vibrant neighborhood of Little Havana.
Growing up in Little Havana, Marta was surrounded by a tight-knit community and her loving family. She attended Immaculata-La Salle High School, graduating in 1972. She pursued higher education at Miami-Dade Community College and Florida International University, earning a degree in Elementary Education in 1993.
Marta began her career at University Federal Bank as a teller in Miami / Little Havana, Florida. It was there, in 1975, that she met Michael Liotti. They fell in love and married in 1976. Marta transitioned from banking to accounting, working at Eastern from 1976 to 1991.
Her true calling came when she became a primary school teacher at Gilbort Porter Elementary School in 1993. Over the next 18 years, she made a lasting impact on her students, nurturing and guiding them with her dedication and passion for education. Marta retired in 2011 when she and Michael moved to Denver, Colorado.
Marta and Michael were blessed with two children, Melissa and Kevin. Marta was a devoted mother, always prioritizing her family. She took immense joy in camping trips in her RV with Michael, participating in her book club, playing Mahjong and poker, and watching her grandchildren, Madeline & Jackson play sports.
Marta loved movies, reading and singing, often bursting into song with her beautiful voice, drawing from everyday conversations. She had a remarkable ability to engage in deep, meaningful discussions and seamlessly switch to light-hearted, fun banter. Her radiant smile, infectious laugh, sharp wit, and quiet strength defined her character.
Marta was a fierce competitor in games, demonstrating her sharp mind and strategic thinking. Her strength and resilience were especially evident during her years-long battle with cancer, which she faced with unwavering courage and grace.
Marta’s legacy is one of profound love, wisdom, and kindness. She touched the lives of everyone who knew her, leaving an indelible impact on her family and friends. By any of her cherished names—Marta, Maqui, Mi Hermana, Abu, Aunt Marta, Tía, Honey, and of course, Mom—she represented the best in all of us. Her love was always dependable and evident through her thoughtful actions and selfless nature, serving as a beacon of compassion and generosity for all who had the privilege of knowing her.
