"I was born a Catholic and I'll die a Catholic." That's what Richard Nasario Marillo followed through with when he was born October 5, 1945, and then joined the Lord on March 4, 2022. To the end, Richard always said he had a full life but let's check what he meant.
His parents were/are Nasario Marillo (deceased); Edith (Martinez) Marillo (deceased); Levy C. Romero (deceased) and Marguerite (Martinez) Marillo.
His dad was the one who dealt out the discipline and Richard was no exception. One time Richard thought he was cool by sneaking out of his bedroom window to go party. It was fun while it lasted, but Dad got hep and nailed the bedroom shut sooooo Richard had some explaining to do!! Whenever he needed help dad was there for him, but one time no one wanted to bail him out. Well, mom wasn't having that...so she got all the money she had been saving and bailed him out...no questions asked by anyone! That was mom
Familia meant everything to him especially when it came to all of his siblings. His sister, Shirley Marillo, died at the early age of 6. His older brothers are all deceased but he always had great memories. For example, Ernie always had his back when it came to the law, one time even going to jail in the police car with him to make sure Richard would be alright. Even after Ernie moved to Chicago, he and Richard remained close. Tony (Cruz) had his stomping grounds at LaAlma Park. No one dared go into the park without his permission. Richard had a night job keeping up the scoreboard by hand (no electronics in those days). After the game, the lights on the field would go out almost immediately, but Cruz always found Richard and made sure he got home safely. He remembered his brother John going into the service and coming back smoking which he didn't do before but everyone came back different.
When Richard wasn't with the Marillos, he was at his Romero. When it came to dinner if Richard didn't like what was being served, he'd get up and say he was going to Marillo house for dinner. Richard could tell that his other siblings wanted to go but couldn't. Richard always stood up to parents no matter which sibling it involved at the time. One time after attending a funeral and returning home, Richard asked why was the TV off? Well the explanation was to respect the dead but Richard said why, they can't hear/see it. After that, the TV stayed on.
All of his siblings just made his heart bigger because he loved each of them. First, there was Danny. Richard always tried to take care of him but some things would happen. For example, both were going to cross the tracks but a car was coming so Richard told him to wait. But Danny took off and the car drove over him...lucky for Danny he fell in between the two railroad tracks when the car went over!! The only thing dirty was Danny's new white coat. Richard knew Mom was going to be mad!!!
There was also a Shirley (Romero) but as it happened she died young. Their was also a brother John (Romero) who died at the age of 17.
Christine and Richard are the only ones of all the Romero siblings who have black hair! Everyone liked to call her KiKi for short. Richard remembers her sending Jr Duran her picture with scotch tape covering her legs as if Jr. couldn't remove the tape.
While at St. Cajetan, Richard became an Altar Boy on call. You would always see him running down the alley at 5:30a to get to church on time. He even received a 5-year pin for all the good work he did as an Altar Boy.l
Richard used to always tell the story of how they lost Robert. Everyone got into their cars to go to the picinic. At the park, mom asked where was Robert as everyone else had kissed her and said hello. After searching the park, they went back home and there was Robert, still knocking on the front door waiting for someone to answer!
He always remembered Debra coming home from her first day of school saying, "That's it for me!" Poor Debra, she had a big surprise in store for her the next day. Oh, and for the record, Debra was the fighter, which she showed when she came to our house with a swollen hand!
Richard always looked forward to watching his brothers Danny, Robert and Randy play ball. He'd travel wherever the tournaments were to watch them. (This always brought back memories for Richard when he and his buddies/brother Danny would play football at Sunken Gardens then head to a school yard for games of basketball and then go out that night to party! The most memorable game was when Richard ran into the tree instead of going around it...two black eyes and not even from fighting! And the first thing Richard said, "Did he catch the ball?"
Geralyn and Michelle were always at the park/tournaments singing/dancing and cheering on their brothers. Roxanne and Yvonne were usually helping mom get the grill going for after the games.
Richard/Jennie have two children, 10 years apart. That was a totally different world. Richard actually got into coaching whatever sport they each got into--baseball, softball, football, tennis, etc. Jennie Michelle (Jennie Jr.) was the first born but grew to love sports just like her dad Richard. When she played, she wanted her dad at the 3rd base coach position so she could see him. Ricardo Joaquin wanted to get on the football field when he was 5 years old he wanted to run with the big boys--they even signed him up early because he played so well. Both watched TV with Dad whenever John Elway/Broncos played, sometimes going to the games in person.
One of Richard's joys was when he retired so that he could take care of all his grandkids (Tommi, Derica, Gabe, Alec, Brett, Janessa and Aliya) while their parents worked. They went all over to parks, libraries, schools, swimming, Elitch's, Lakeside, etc. but always went to Grandma Susie's for a buffet lunch.
He bragged about how well behaved all his grandkids were no matter where they went. If there was any type of problem, the kids would dread their name on the list on the wall...that meant sometime in the future when they were having a good time, Richard would pull them aside for an hour to make up for the time they had been a problem. Needless to say that didn't happen too often.
As time passed, each of Richard's children have had their own babies. There are Michelle's: Stephen Joseph (working in Construction), the twins Alec Michael and Brett Joseph are attending CSU and Angelique (Gonzales) Archuleta has two great grand babies,Julian and Emma.
Ricardo's children: Tommi (in college for Construction Management); Derica (Denver School of Nursing); Janessa (Paralegal Program), Alyia (attending School of Mines on Full Ride) and Gabe (working in Construction).
As an example, Richard was a great believer in education which he encouraged in all of his children/grandchildren/great grandchildren by telling them all he himself completed 90 credits of a Social Studies/Chicano Studies Degree!
Going through life, Richard always said "If I reach the age of 65, I'll be satisfied and the rest (of life) will be gravy!' Sure looks like he did just that!!
No services for Richard are at this time.
