Terry was born on November 3, 1947, in Omaha, Nebraska, to Glen P. Stine and Helen M. (Petersen) Stine. As a child, his family moved to Arvada, Colorado, where he was raised and where the values of hard work, independence, and self-reliance that defined his life took hold.
He graduated from Arvada High School in 1965 and earned an Associate Degree in Auto Mechanics from Trinidad State Junior College in 1967. Terry spent his career working in the auto industry, most often in parts departments, where his mechanical knowledge, straightforward approach, and reliability were well known. For decades, he also spent Saturdays doing something he truly loved—selling motorcycles at his favorite bike shop.
On November 4, 1972, Terry married Deborah Kay Bortman, with whom he shared nearly 49 years of marriage. Together they built a life grounded in loyalty, tradition, and family.
Terry was a gruff, no-nonsense man who didn’t waste words (except maybe in a text), but he also had a goofy sense of humor that showed up when you least expected it. He loved motorcycles, hunting, and collecting guns, and believed in learning by doing. He taught his three children how to ride and how to shoot, and passed along a fair amount of his stubbornness as well. While he wasn’t one for grand displays of emotion, a gentler side of Terry emerged as a grandfather, where his steady presence and quiet affection spoke louder than words.
He is survived by his children Melissa Koenig (Jasper), Geoffrey Stine, and Sarah Sarabia (Jim). He was a proud grandfather to Rachel Romero, Brandon Sarabia, and Rylan Koenig, and a great-grandfather to Jameson Snyder, son of Rachel Romero and Matthew Snyder.
He is also survived by his brother Ronald Bruce Stine and his wife, Linda; his sister-in-law Darcie Stine; niece Stephanie Figueroa (Ed); and nephews Jerry Stine, Blake Stine, and Brad Stine, along with many great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Deborah Stine; his parents, Glen and Helen Stine; his sister Sharon Williams; his brother Randy Stine; his mother-in-law, Evelyn Bortman; his niece Stacy Crockett; and his nephews, Matthew Stine, and Chris Stine.
Terry will be remembered for his love of the open road and outdoors, his grit, and his loyalty to those he cared about. He was a devoted student of U.S. history, especially the wars that shaped the nation, and took pride in understanding the sacrifices behind the freedoms he valued. Above all, he lived life on his own terms and left a lasting mark on those who knew him.
