Bernie was born in Bellaire, Ohio to Earl Johnson and Betty (Ramsay/Johnson) Brunner.
Bernie is preceded in death by his parents and many aunts and uncles.
Bernie is survived by his wife of 52 years Victoria Bugala Johnson, daughter Kimberly (Trevor) Sloan of Port St. Lucie FL, son Zachary (Anneke) Johnson of Boynton Beach FL, grandson Taylor Allen (Taylor Paige) Sloan, granddaughter Kaley (Andrew) Sloan, and grandchildren Harper, Braker, and Hunter Johnson. Bernie also leaves behind siblings Julia (Jeff) Beckett, Steve (Cheryl) Johnson, Eric (Tina) Johnson, Annette (Roger) Hammond, and Jeramy Johnson, as well as countless nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Bernie and Vicki raised their family in Pickerington Ohio, and after a short time in Fort Meyers Florida, returned home to Ohio to their little slice of heaven in Sugar Grove Ohio. It is here where they found themselves among new friends and a loving church family at Sugar Grove United Methodist Church.
Bernie loved and served his country after college and was in the Army Reserves for many years.
Bernie proudly worked for the Department of Taxation for the State of Ohio for over 25 years. He created many special friendships during his time with the State and often told stories about his time working there. His family still maintains relationships from those times.
He then moved on to a career with a national accounting firm and learned many different things working in private business. After several years, Bernie decided to form his own practice with his partner that focused on state and local taxation on a national level. He enjoyed having his own business and often talked to his children as he was going through the highs and lows of owning a business. Ultimately, Bernie and his partner made a decision to sell the business and he was able to successfully retire and look forward to the many years of enjoying his children and their spouses and actively participate with his wife in the upbringing of his five beautiful grandchildren.
Bernie lived his life passionately! He loved being outdoors hunting or fishing, chopping firewood or mowing the grass, or simply wandering. He loved sports; coaching his son in baseball and soccer and later his grandsons travel soccer team. He loved cheering on all of his grandkids in whatever sport they were into. Bernie was a kid at heart and often found himself teaching, listening, rough housing or playing quietly with the little ones at any event. Kids loved Bernie. We all loved Bernie. He will be deeply missed.
