Carolyn Kay (Slater) Shonk, 76, of Lancaster passed away on May 26, 2018 at the Pickering House. She was born April 20, 1942 in Lancaster to Betty (Moury) Slater and Russell Walt and later adopted by James Slater. Kay was a 1960 graduate of Lancaster High School and enjoyed attending many of their class reunions over the years. She retired in 2007 from the Ohio Department of Public Safety/Ohio State Highway Patrol general headquarters in Columbus Ohio where she was a secretary. She dearly loved her family and will forever be remembered for her delicious meals, special gifts and treats at family gatherings that she planned. Along with cooking she loved collecting things, decorating and caring for her home, flower gardening, listening to music and cheering on the Ohio State Buckeye football team. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend who touched all with her sweet thoughtful nature, kindness and generosity. She will be greatly missed by her family whom she loved dearly. The time spent with them and all of the cherished memories that they made together will forever keep her close at heart.
She is survived by her three daughters Jennifer (Jeff) Sevcik of Downers Grove, IL, Julie (John) Tomlinson of Columbus and Karen (Mark) Fisher of Cincinnati; her granddaughters Jaye Sevcik and Leah Fisher and her grandsons Ben and Henry Sevcik and Kyle and Joseph Fisher. She is also survived by her sisters Linda (George) Swisher of Kingsport, TN and Sheri (Steve) Grygier of Savannah, GA; her uncle Floyd Moury of Lancaster, her aunt Pat Moury of Lancaster, many cousins, nieces, and nephews and her very dear lifelong friend Bonnie Reed of Lancaster.
She was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents, her two young brothers Danny and Michael and several beloved aunts and uncles.
Kay’s daughters would like to thank each of the employees and volunteers that cared for their Mom and supported them at the OSU Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center, the OSU James Cancer Center, FairHope Hospice and the Pickering House.
Funeral services will be held on Friday June 1st, 2018 at 12:30PM at the HALTEMAN-FETT & DYER FUNERAL HOME with Chaplain Mark Linn officiating. Burial is to follow at Forest Rose Cemetery.
