Audrey had a strong affection for Montreal and Quebec and attended Roslyn School, Trafalgar School, and McGill University. She had a loving and devoted relationship with her husband W. Alan Smith (1929-2018). They wed in 1955, and job transfers took them to Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa, and Winnipeg before settling in Pointe-Claire, Quebec in 1969. She had an adventurous spirit, positive nature and made life-long friends while embracing the beauty of each location they lived.
Audrey loved to hike in the Rockies and had many enjoyable trips to the south of France and Spain to escape winter when Alan retired.
Audrey had a keen intelligence and memory, and her interests included knitting, baking, volunteering with the United Church, playing bridge and a variety of summer and winter sports. She will be remembered foremost for her kind and supportive nature and being a non-judgemental listener who fostered relationships. Her friends and family were tremendous support to her and Alan when they lost their eldest daughter, Janet, to illness in 1973.
Audrey often reflected on her happy childhood in Montreal with loving parents E. Howard Cliff and Jean (Janet) Brodie, and had a special closeness with her three sisters: Nancy Vining, Judy Ferguson, and Mary Ross. 75+ summers were spent at Metis Beach, Quebec with her extended family which she cherished.
Audrey and Alan left Montreal for British Columbia in 2014 to be closer to their daughters, who live in the Lower Mainland.
Audrey will be missed greatly by children Ian (Jane), Cynthia Anne (Paul Moffatt), Margo (Robert Kavanagh); grandchildren David, Maddy, Fiona and Patti; great- grandchildren Emery, Emmeline, Cyril and Edith; sister Mary Ross; sisters-in-law Vera Hardiman and Agnes Vance and many nieces and nephews.
A burial at Mount Royal Cemetery and celebration of life will take place, when it is safe to do so, in 2021.
