James Stewart McGregor

Jim was a car guy from early on, working first at Keith Beetle Motors and then was part owner of B&B Tire in Langley. He became deeply involved in his community, coaching with Langley Little League and serving as a Beaver and Cub leader. In 1970, he began what would become a 36-year career with Langley City Fire Rescue Service, retiring as Fire Chief in 2006.

Jim was immensely proud to call Langley home. More than a place, it was the community he poured his heart into and the place where he raised his family, built lifelong friendships, and spent countless hours helping others.

He was a devoted dad to Chris (Cheryl) McGregor, Kelly (Lyle) Secret, and Mike (Cassandra) McGregor, and a proud grandfather to Tyrus, Daelyn, Sydney, and Mason. His family was his greatest accomplishment, and he worked hard to build a life they could be proud of. He was also immensely proud of his 23 years of sobriety, a testament to his strength, determination, and willingness to do the hard work required to change his life.

Jim was predeceased by his father John McGregor, mother Peggy McGregor; and his brother, Jack MacGregor. He is survived by his siblings Ellen Norman, Betty (Alf) Desy, Gord (Jacky) McGregor, and Ken (Stephanie) McGregor, along with his children, grandchildren, extended family, and many friends who will miss him dearly.

Retirement did not slow Jim down. In many ways, it kept him busier than when he was working. He volunteered with numerous organizations, wrote songs, stories, and poems, and could always be counted on to find a way to contribute. He loved a good live auction, especially when the money raised went right back into his community. He believed in showing up, helping your neighbour, giving your time, and making your community a better place.

Jim has asked that there be no public Celebration of Life. Instead, he would like people to take the day off, put down their busy schedules, and spend time with their families.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. If you are looking for a suggestion, we think Jim would recommend the Langley Christmas Bureau, Douglas Park Community School Society, Langley Hospice Society, or Langley Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

And if you are not in a position to make a financial donation, your time is just as valuable. Consider volunteering, helping a neighbour, or making a contribution to your own community, at least that’s what McGregor said.
