Maria was born on October 1, 1932, in the village of Rabo de Peixe, on the island of São Miguel in the Azores, Portugal.
She was predeceased by Manuel Luis Macedo, her beloved husband of 49 years.
Maria leaves behind her four loving children: Luis (Rosemary), Maria, Ilda (Bruce), and Teresa (Will); and her four cherished grandchildren: Jonathan, Danielle, Nathan, and Joshua. She is also survived by her last remaining sibling, Edmundo Faria of Bermuda.
Born during the Great Depression, at a time when Portugal was undergoing significant political and economic change, Maria was the second youngest of eight children. Although life was often challenging, she carried with her many fond memories of her childhood. Among her most treasured were the sounds of music and laughter that filled the family home. Her father and many of her siblings played musical instruments or sang, creating an atmosphere of warmth and joy that remained close to her heart throughout her life.
In 1967, Maria embarked on a new chapter when she immigrated to Canada. In 1981, she proudly became a Canadian citizen, embracing her new home while remaining deeply connected to her Portuguese heritage and traditions.
Those fortunate enough to have known Maria will remember her unwavering kindness, compassion, generosity, and giving spirit. She had a special way of making others feel loved and cared for, often expressing her affection through her wonderful Portuguese cooking. Her kitchen was a place where love was shared, traditions were celebrated, and lasting memories were made.
Maria was also a woman of remarkable creativity and talent. Her beautiful embroidery was more than a pastime; each intricate piece was a true work of art, reflecting her patience, dedication, and attention to detail.
Above all, Maria will be remembered for the love she gave so freely, the warmth she brought into the lives of others, and the quiet strength with which she faced life's challenges. Her legacy lives on through her children, grandchildren, and all those whose lives she touched.
Maria will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband, Manuel, at Gardens of Gethsemane Cemetery in Surrey, British Columbia.
Forever loved, deeply missed, and always remembered.
