Mary Stevenson

Mary was born January 19, 1937 on a farm in Gilwood, Alberta, the daughter of John and Annie Karpa. Upon graduating from high school in High Prairie in 1955, she continued on at the Alberta College in Edmonton, Alberta, which is where Mary learned Pitman Shorthand. With the completion of college, Mary moved back to the Kinuso area, working for the Provincial Government Magistrate which involved traveling to various court houses within the community. Through this work, Mary first became exposed to the world of the RCMP. In 1962, Mary met Walter Stevenson who became her loving husband in 1963. They ended up in Tofield, Alberta when George, their son was born in 1964. In 1965 they moved to Vegreville, Alberta where they welcomed their second child Cheryl. In 1968, an opportunity came for Mary and Walter to move with their family to Wetaskiwin, Alberta. Mary quickly became employed working at various stenographer jobs until November of 1974 where she took a position working as a stenographer for the RCMP. 1977 brought Mary, Walter and family to St. Albert, Alberta. Now was the time to expand her career into working as the 911 dispatch and RCMP St. Albert Detachment clerk in which she absolutely loved until she retired in 1998.

Mary was never afraid to try new things, from learning to ski which involved getting stuck in a tree well & having to be helped by ski patrol, bowling with Walter, coaching the girls softball teams, trying Karate, learning crafts like pottery, making silk flowers and wax candles, along with crocheting huge blankets for her children. One of Mary’s biggest loves involved camping and hiking the Rockies with her family. Lake Louise hike to the Tea House and up onto the glacier being one of her favourites.

Traveling also filled her life, especially her trip to Europe, the Middle East and Australia with Walter.

As time progressed through life, she became an avid reader and exceptional at puzzles but theses activities never stopped her from maintaining her dedication to physical activity and cognitive health. As a very giving lady to those around her she also gave of herself to the church through acts of service.

Survived by her children and their spouses, George Stevenson (Debbie Stevenson), Cheryl Stevenson (Darryl Huwyler) and her grandchildren Garrett Huwyler, Kimberly Stevenson and Paul Stevenson. Predeceased by her husband Walter Stevenson.

A graveside service will be held on Aug 11, 2026 @ 1:00 p.m. at The Langley Lawn Cemetery located at 4393-208 St, Langley, B.C.
