It is with deep sadness, the family of Myles Lyle Parsons announces his passing on December 5, 2019, at the age of 81. Myles will be lovingly remembered and survived by his wife of 59 years Donna; children: Kerry, Colin, Loree; and grandchildren: Jacqueline, Kelsey, Riley and Paige.
Myles was born in the town of Grenfell, Saskatchewan, where he and his siblings: Denys, Leslie, Joan, Ellwyn and Lynne were raised by proud parents Denys and Beatrice. He grew up working on the farm and enjoyed hockey, curling, and playing trumpet in the band. Grenfell is also where he met his childhood sweetheart and future wife Donna. He had a busy childhood!
Myles was an accomplished scholar, graduating with Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan, and a PhD in Hydrogeology from the University of Michigan. His professional career started in 1960 with Hudson Bay Oil and Gas in Calgary. Between 1965 and 1979 Myles worked for the Federal Government in Ottawa including service in Environment, External Affairs, and Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). In 1979 he accepted a position in the private sector with Klohn Leonoff Consulting in Richmond, BC. The family moved to the West Coast where he would spend the next 40 years of his life. Myles felt fortunate to have an exciting and meaningful career which involved considerable International travel to places such as Ethiopia, Nigeria, Indonesia, Kenya, and Sri Lanka.
Myles was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His book, Prairie Roots, outlines the Parsons family history dating back to its origins in the counties of Somerset, Dorset, and Wiltshire UK, and chronicles its homesteading in Saskatchewan through to modern times. He was always active in his communities, often taking on leadership roles such as fund raising and construction of the first indoor ice rink and recreation centre in Kanata, Ontario. He was an environmental pioneer many years before it became popular in society. He loved flowers, gardening, and birds.
Myles you will truly be missed by all whose lives you touched.
