He was born in Selkirk, Manitoba on February 16, 1938, to parents Thomas Ashton and Sarah Catherine Smith. Bob had four siblings. While he is survived by Stan (Doloris - deceased) and Herb, he is predeceased by his brother Ben (Frances – also deceased) and sister Emily.
He is deeply missed and will be forever cherished by his children Bobbie, Wendy (Gus Ascroft), Kathy (John Hope), and Jeff; and his grandchildren Tarina, Arin, Richard; Brandi, Danielle, Shela, Nathan, Georgia; Sean, Rachel; and Benjamin. As well, he will be missed by his many great and great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.
Bob spent most of his life working in the forest industry, mainly as a sawyer, but also as a long shoreman, forklift operator, lumber grader and foreman. These positions afforded him travel all over BC, from Tahsis to Haida Gwaii, the Sunshine Coast, Lytton, and the Lower Mainland. He made many friends in the sawmill industry.
In his 70s, he got his security license and enjoyed sporting a uniform, badge and a baton like flashlight while he worked as a night watch man and security guard up and down the Sunshine Coast.
He was known for his legendary pancake cookouts, his love of fishing, and any chance to be out on the ocean. He had a love for jigging, cracking jokes and played a mean set of spoons.
Bob had a unique talent for finding hidden treasures — whether at a garage sale, thrift store, flea market, or auction. His joy came from the adventure of the search, finding a bargain he could flip and making a profit.
A gathering of close friends and family will be held at the Fort Langley Lion’s Hall on October 23rd between 1-3 to celebrate Bob’s life. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to donate to the Salvation Army or the Canadian Red Cross.
