Carrie Therese (McNamara) Muylle, age 66, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, died in peace with her husband and two sons at her side, on Wednesday evening, May 17, 2023. She died in the comfort of her Regent Street home on Lansing’s eastside, after a twenty-two month struggle with advanced bile duct cancer. Carrie was born on April 11, 1957, in Lansing, Michigan to Edward and Lucille (Martin) McNamara. The second youngest of six children, she grew up on Vine Street, surrounded by her siblings and many neighborhood families. Carrie attended Lansing’s public schools. In August of 1973, right before her sophomore year at Lansing Eastern High School, Carrie started working at Sparrow Hospital through the co-op program. She spent her first couple years in dietary services, but for most of her forty-eight year career at Sparrow, Carrie worked as one of the most dedicated and skilled phlebotomists in the laboratory department.
Carrie graduated from Eastern High School in 1976 and continued to build a reputation of kindness, care and reliability through her service and growth at Sparrow. It was through her work that she made her closest friends in life, friends who cared for her and whom she cared for endlessly. These friends lovingly referred to Carrie as Care Bear. Back in the day, she and her friends loved making the scene at places like Houlihans, Dooley’s, and Coral Gables. Carrie met Dave Muylle on a blind date in 1981. The balance they cultivated in their relationship was gentle and profound. They were married on April 15, 1994 at St. Mary Cathedral in Lansing, the same church Carrie’s parents were married at in 1948. The following spring, Carrie gave birth to their first son, Andrew, and four years later to their second son, Austin. Carrie and Dave raised their boys on the eastside of Lansing, in the same neighborhood she grew up in, just down the street from her mom. Carrie was the important support system behind her sons’ and husband’s creative endeavors. She recently became a grandmother of two and was filled with such pride and gratitude to be in the room when her granddaughter, Mae Therese, was born.
Carrie is survived by her husband of twenty-nine years, David; sons Andrew and Austin; grandchildren Eli and Mae Therese and their mother, Indago McIntyre; sisters Linda (Mario) Pascotto, and Sherry McNamara (Terry Maag); sister-in-law Annette McNamara; brothers Thomas (Terri) McNamara and Mark McNamara; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by parents Lucille and Edward, brother Michael “Mick,” and her great uncle “Jerry,” Gerald Kincaid.
Carrie’s boys want to thank the nurses, doctors, and staff at the Sparrow Cancer Center, the University of Michigan Cancer Center, and Sparrow Home Hospice care. They did all they could to ensure that Carrie had both time and quality of life. And finally, we would like to thank Carrie, Mom, for the immensity and timelessness of her love and compassion, for allowing us to support her and take care of her for the last two years, and for fighting stoically and with grace.
Visitation will be held 2-4PM and 6-8PM, with a rosary being prayed at 7:30PM, Monday, May 29, 2023 at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 900 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing, MI 48912. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated 10AM Tuesday, May 30th at St. Mary Cathedral Church, 219 Seymour Ave, Lansing 48933, with visitation an hour prior. In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to please consider a donation to “Sparrow Foundation” - 1322 E. Michigan Ave. Suite 204, Lansing, MI 48912 - in memory of Carrie Muylle. Donations will help to support the frontline workers in the laboratory department where Carrie worked for most of her forty-eight-year career at Sparrow.
