He was born on October 23, 1941, in Bismarck, North Dakota, to William and Bessie Merkel. He married the love of his life, Josephine Merkel, on August 23, 1969, in Lansing, Michigan.
Dennis pursued education at Lansing Community College, earning an Associate's degree. He bravely served his country in the Air Force, stationed in Japan, where he served as a pharmacy technician. During his time there, he explored the scenic mountains of Japan on his motorcycle, creating memories that lasted a lifetime.
Following his military service, Dennis embarked on a successful career with Michigan National Bank, rising to the position of Assistant Vice President and serving as an officer of the board.
Beyond his professional life, Dennis found joy in various hobbies and pursuits. He had a passion for woodworking, finding solace and creativity in crafting beautiful pieces. He also enjoyed the camaraderie of bowling, the tranquility of fishing, and the exhilaration of marathon running.
Dennis will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, his dedication to his family, and his zest for life. He leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories.
He is survived by his beloved spouse, Josephine Merkel; his sons, Steve Merkel and Matt Merkel; his grandson, Jake Merkel; and his siblings, Darlene, Judy, Kathy, Debbie, and Doug. He is preceded in death by his sisters, Mary, Jackie, Doris, and Marilyn, and his parents.
In his early years, Dennis would rally his children with the phrase "Ikimashou," meaning "Let's go!" In later years, his expressions of gratitude were encapsulated in "Domo Arigato," meaning "thank you".
