Don was united in marriage to Catherine “Jane” West, with whom he shared many years of devoted companionship. He was a loving father to Susan Knepp (Jason) and Jeff West (Stephanie), and a cherished grandfather to Enno, Audrey, Ethan, Chloe, and Conner.
Don proudly served his country in the United States Army, completing two years of active duty service followed by four years in the Army Reserve. His service was an important part of his life and was carried out with honor and commitment.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar C. “Ed” West and Versal A. West (Rupright); his sisters Carlene “Jean” Frazier and Marlene Chard; and his brother Robert L. “Bob” West.
Don’s life was defined by selflessness and a deep-seated devotion to family. He leaves behind a legacy of love, guided by the faith and wisdom he so generously shared. He was equally known for his quick-witted sense of humor and playful spirit. If you ever attended an event where Don was present, you may have heard a deep, booming “Oh yeah” suddenly ringing out from nowhere – yes, that was him, and it never failed to bring a smile to those around him.
A man of deep faith, Don loved his Church and lived his life guided by his belief in God. He was committed to serving others and found great purpose in his volunteer work with St. Vincent de Paul, which held special meaning for him. An avid sports fan, Don faithfully supported Michigan State University athletics as well as the Detroit Red Wings, Detroit Lions, and Detroit Pistons. He also especially treasured time spent up north with family and friends, where many lasting memories were made.
Don will be lovingly remembered for his faith, generosity, humor, and devotion to family. His legacy will continue through all who were blessed to know and love him.
