Mrs. McComb was one of my favorite teachers at Mason High School.  She was a sweet, kind woman & I always enjoyed her class.  
 She always had a smile for her students.  My condolences to her family.

I had the privilege of working with Joan at Mason High School. What a wonderful woman!! She always had a smile on her face, a kind word to say and was so spunky.  The world could use more people like Joan.  My heartfelt condolences to the family on the loss of a beautiful woman.

Joan was one great lady, wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother, teacher, friend, was always happy and with a wonderful spirit. 

She was our friend for over 70 years and gave us so many great memories. We cherish everyone of them.

Joan McComb was such a peach.  She made me feel like I was one of her beloved family members as far back as I can remember--50 years or so.  Most recently Joan came over for dinner (5ish years ago?) and we strolled around our yard after.  She pointed out several plants and trees.  Although most were weeds, Joan explained the beauty and purpose in each one.  (I think she appreciated the fact that we aren't Roundup people!)  I believe Joan looked at people the same way and her warmth and love was spread far and wide to so many that were lucky enough to know her.  I know she will be missed but is in a far better place. xoxo

To the McComb Family,

I am so sorry that Joan's quick smile and bubbly nature will be just a memory now.  Though I only met Joan a few times, when she was spending time with my mom, I remember how she could just light up a room with her positive attitude.

The greatest among us live not grand public lives, but are the enduring personalities that make life worth living. Joan was that, and so much more.

The girls had long since retired upstairs because even then, Laura and Linda didn’t quite have the sugar-jones in the significant way I did; but Joan had baked a cake from a new recipe that day, and she’d just finished frosting it: I wasn’t going anywhere. Beaming, she asked, “Sheila, would you try a piece with me?” Would I? Jesus, yes! We sat at the family’s green antiqued dining room table, in the cozy, low-ceilinged dining room dwarfed by the table where I’d dined with the family over the years. Joan’s beautiful eyes sparkled while she gazed at the rich buttercream icing blanketing the cake. And that impish grin with her teeth like little pearls revealing the jewel she was. Flour still dusted the red apron draped around her torso. Though the cake had been pulled from the oven hours ago, the warmth from that well-used gaslit stove hovered in the air like a toasty duvet inviting you to feel safe and loved. She’d reconsidered putting the confetti-colored sprinkles on the cake, but one still clung to her chin. Pink, I think. “Mrs. McComb, it’s beautiful.” 

She cut into the blood red cake that was a glorious contrast to the quarter-inch thick ivory-colored frosting and handed me a big piece. She knew me well. I took a bite and groaned with pleasure. “Amazing.” I ate two pieces, and had I not been embarrassed, I would’ve requested a third. I’m not a huge cake fan, but it’s still the best cake I’ve ever eaten. There’s a baking team here in Los Angeles that will recreate any recipe from your childhood to try and replicate the magical feelings associated with those treats. Even if that team could reproduce the color and consistency and taste of that cake, they’d never match it. Joan McComb’s love and compassion are what made everything she touched seem plucked from paradise: The cake was heaven, but her love was divine. 

I love you, Joan. Until we meet again, I will hold you in my heart; and I thank you for having held me in yours.   


Sending my prayers and sympathy to the McComb family in honor of your mom Joan. We were neighbors long ago in East Lansing, she had 5 young children and we had 6 so it was a busy and memorable time! Joan was a lovely person and friend with marvelous cooking and craft skills that she shared. May you cherish the wonderful memories you had with her.

We were church members with Joan at UUMC for the past 20 years. She had an infectious smile, a can-do spirit and was a truly inspiring person. She will be greatly missed but leaves a big and impactful legacy.

Dear Linda, Laura and Family: So sorry for your loss. Given what I know of each of you, I am certain your mom has traveled to the restful and beautiful place where you will all spend eternity together. May she rest in peace.

My dear friend- bon voyage on your journey to the angels. We were friends and colleagues at Mason High School. You were respected as a teacher and especially  known for your talented narration of of our faculty Christmas pageants. Your baking was outstanding, we were so lucky to get to sample many goodies from your kitchen. What a woman! The last time we visited, you showed me your daily planner filled with clippings of possible events you wanted to attend. You were a dynamo!  

I am so glad I got to meet your Mom. She obviously passed down her welcoming smile and warm personality to her children and grandchildren. I know you will miss her dearly but what a wonderful life she gave to you and what a wonderful life you gave to her! 

I feel so blessed to have known Joan for most of my life.  Joan, Ben, and their beautiful family made me feel like part of the family.  I am flooded with memories of growing up with a special place in their home.  From trips to West Virginia, to yummy meals  and crafts around that very memorable dining room table, I felt the love of this beautiful family.  As a teacher also, I have so many memories of Joan working well into the night grading English papers.  She was an incredibly dedicated teacher and was an inspiration to me to follow that path.  Linda, Laura, Mark, Paul , David, and family, thank you for sharing your beautiful mother with me.  I will cherish the memories that I have for the rest of my life.  My thoughts and prayers are with all of you as you celebrate the beauty of such a special soul.  I'm sure that the angels, and your daddy, are dancing in Heaven with your mom as they welcome her into her eternal home.   Love you all dearly!
