Joan is reunited with her dear husband, Ben, of 56 years, before his passing on to eternal life on January 6, 2012. She is survived by her children, Mark (Christine) McComb, Paul (Lori) McComb, David McComb, Laura McComb Schmelter, Linda McComb (John) Hundt; and grandchildren- Ellie (Hundt) Sutherland (Heath) and Betsie Hundt, Ben McComb (Holly) and Lauren ( McComb) Potter(Jon), Suzie (Schmelter) Rygwelski ( Zach), Jake Schmelter, Sophie Schmelter, Shay McComb; three great-grandchildren, brother Tim Ferrell and her treasured dog, Huey.
Joan grew up in West Virginia during the Depression and always held her heritage and childhood in West Virginia close to her heart. She graduated from Buckhannon Upsher High School in 1950, earned a Bachelor's degree from West Virginia Wesleyan College in 1954, and received a Master's degree in English Literature from Michigan State University. She started her career in 1954 teaching high school English in Sheridan Michigan, then taking some years off to be a full time mother, and later teaching English at Mason High School. Teaching American Literature, grammar and enjoying her students and colleagues was something she cherished.
Joan was a charter member of University United Methodist Church in East Lansing and active on various committees throughout her over 60 year membership; Chairing many Christmas Bazaars, Mother-Daughter Banquets, and President of UMW ( United Methodist Women.) She also founded, and administered the Elderberries Senior Group, a member of the MSU Alumni and Sew and Chat group, The Iris Society (President), DeWitt Garden Club, and spent many years playing Mrs. Claus at The DeWitt Christmas Market. The time and devotion spent volunteering her talents and enthusiasm to causes was near and dear to her heart.
Joan’s warm and curious spirit held many passions, including numerous music genres, especially bluegrass, dancing, the culinary arts, poetry and books, traveling, antiquing, and being a lifelong learner.
Though small in stature, Joan’s joyful soul, beautiful smile and love for people made her larger than life to anyone who crossed her path. Mostly, Joan felt exceptionally blessed with a long life filled with faith, purpose, great love and precious memories of family and friends.
