

Larry Shumway passed away on November 28th at the age of 70 years old in his sleep in his favorite chair. Larry was born on February 27th, 1954, in Lansing, Michigan to Gerald Lee Shumway and Marge Arlene Shumway (Guile). He graduated from Everett High School in Lansing, Michigan in 1972, where he held the record in basketball for most points scored in a game until Earvin “Magic” Johnson broke his record. He then attended Adrian College where he played basketball until injuries ended his career early. Larry then became the coach of the men's JV basketball team at Adrian College, which at the time Larry was the youngest coach to coach at the collegiate level.
Larry was a chef by trade, while also owning many restaurants throughout his life. Most recently he held culinary positions at Eagle Eye Golf Club and Petoskey Bay-View Country Club working alongside his eldest son Evan, the Clubhouse Manager. Larry was an active member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon during his time at Adrian College. He and his family were members of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Lansing, Michigan. He most recently found his love in fishing spending countless peaceful days on Lake Michigan with his cousin, Thad Shumway and his wingman, Jim Cummings. He was active in coaching his sons and friends basketball, football, and baseball teams. Larry also introduced his sons to golf which was such a large part of their lives. Larry loved a good time and was always comfortable holding court and telling stories with such vigor. Larry wouldn't allow anyone to have a bad day while you were in his company. Larry spent the majority of his life living in the Lansing area.
Larry is survived by his ex-wife, Penney Shumway of Lansing, and his two sons, Evan Shumway currently of Petoskey, Michigan and Luke Shumway currently of Charleston, South Carolina. Larry is preceded in death by his father and mother Gerald Lee Shumway and Marge Arlene Shumway (Guile); brother, Doug Shumway of Lansing; sister, Beth Ann Seegraves (Shumway) of Grand Ledge; niece, Frances (Franny) Seegraves; nephew, Nathan Long of Millington and niece, Kathleen Long of Traverse City.
Larry has requested no funeral and instead a celebration in his honor. His Celebration of Life will take place Sunday, December 8th 2024 at his favorite hangout, the Nuthouse Sports Grill, located at 420 E. Michigan Ave, Lansing, Michigan 48933. He will be accepting friends and family from 1pm-4pm.
