Leo H. Doyle, DDS, age 88, retired dentist, died February 28 at Hospice House of Mid Michigan, Lansing. Leo was born on June 19, 1921, in Crandon, Wisconsin, to the late Wm. Leo Doyle and Edna Anderson Doyle. He grew up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, graduated Valedictorian, Pequaming High School, 1939; University of Michigan Dental School, 1945. Leo lettered in Varsity basketball for the Michigan Wolverines 1941-43. He was honored to be a member of the U of M Basketball Alumni Association. Leo was one of nine children. One brother, William Doyle, survives him, as well as brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law; and many nephews and nieces. Dr. Doyle is survived by his wife of 66 years, Geraldine "Babe" Hoff Doyle. They married on October 23, 1943. Graceful and romantic partners on the dance floor and at the ice rink, they were a beautiful couple. Together they raised six children, five survive him. He was predeceased by son Gary (Diane) Doyle and son-in-law Charles Drewes. Surviving children include Stephanie (John) Gregg; Jacqueline Drewes; Brian (Margie) Doyle; Deidre Doyle; and Lauretta (Barry Frechette) Doyle; along with 18 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Leo adored his family, especially the times spent with his grandchildren at the cottage--canoeing, sailing, swimming, golfing, ice-skating, and cross-country skiing. Great-grandchildren brought him great delight and joy. He served his country honorably with over ten years (active and reserve) military service: ROTC during WWII and as a Navy dentist assigned to the Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Dr. Doyle practiced dentistry in the Lansing area for 53 years, retiring in 1999. He enjoyed caring for his patients, lunch with colleagues and attending his dental class reunions. He loved a good story: tales of his boyhood adventures on Lake Superior's shores, summers home from college spent working in logging camps, side-splitting stories--especially on St. Patrick's Day! Until the last couple of years, he loved reading novels and biographies, and working on his computer gathering the family genealogy and staying in touch with friends and relatives via email. Leo was a wonderful son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Kind and caring, his beautiful blue Irish eyes smiled! Services for Dr. Doyle will be 5:00 P.M. Saturday, March 6, 2010, at Tiffany Funeral Home, 3232 W. Saginaw, Lansing. The family will receive friends and guests from 4-5 P.M. Saturday. Donations may be made in Leo?s name to Hospice House of Mid Michigan, or to the U. of M. Scholarship Fund. The family expresses its appreciation to the compassionate angels at Hospice House of Mid-Michigan, and to the caring team of professionals at Sparrow Hospital for their guidance. Friends may sign the online guestbook at www.tiffanyfuneralhome.com. An Old Irish Blessing: May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind always be at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, and rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
