

On Friday, August 16th, Margaret J. Compo passed peacefully in her Lansing, Michigan home. She was 76. Born to Joseph Compo and Lucy Peaine, Margaret was a beloved sister, cousin, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother to many. She was surrounded by her daughters and daughter-in-law at the time of death who provided loving in-home care for her.
Margaret was known to many for her smile and her love of spending time with family. She belonged to the Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians and was proud of her heritage. She regularly attended community events around Michigan with family and friends, including powwows and Ojibwe language classes at the Nokomis Learning Center. Margaret and daughters Dakota and Jazzlyn also loved traveling and regularly took trips to northern parts of Michigan. Her family loved her dearly in return; granddaughter Dylan Chase-Lavelley donated a kidney to Margaret, which gave her an extra 10 healthy years with her family.
Margaret leaves behind a large, loving family. She is predeceased by her parents Joseph Compo and Lucy Peaine, ex-husband Marvin H. Genia, and longtime partner John M. Jacko. She is also predeceased by half-sister Rosella B. Keshick, brother Joseph Compo, sister Amelia Compo, brother Peter Compo, son Russel D. Genia, and grandson Alexmartin Dutton-Jacko. Margaret is survived by sons Joseph (Nicole) Genia, Kurt S. Genia, and Jeremiah (Barbara) Compo; daughters Margaret (Jeffrey) Adams, Dakota Compo, and Jazzlyn Genia-Compo. Loving grandchildren include Alexandra Genia (Charles Loelius), Rachel Genia, Nangohns Genia, Michael Denhof-Genia, Dakotah Chase-Lavelley, Dylan Chase-Lavelley, Jaimi (Joshua) Magyari, Jillian Adams, Isaac Adams, Jacob Adams, Nicholas Adams, Daminga Genia, and Myranda Genia. Margaret enjoyed being a great-grandmother to Zezalyn Evans, Cameron Remsing, James Magyari, Noah-Jeremiah Mendoza, River Mendoza, Emory Mendoza, Lucious Dutton, Navi Raquell-Genia, and Vyla Adams.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 22nd from 5pm-8pm at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 900 East Michigan Ave, Lansing, MI. A committal service will be held on Friday, August 23rd at 12pm at the Sunset Hill Cemetery, East Jordan, MI.
A feast in Margaret’s honor will be held at the Nokomis Cultural Heritage Center on Sunday, August 25th, from 2pm-4pm. Feel free to bring dishes to pass. Please bring a feast bundle.
