

Michael Joseph "Mike" Gillenkirk, 80, passed away on July 2, 2024, in Lansing, Michigan. Born in Toledo, Ohio, Mike dedicated many years to education as a computer science teacher at Lansing Community College, the Michigan School for the Blind, and Peckham Home, enriching many lives through his passion and knowledge.
Mike graduated from Monroe Catholic Central High School in 1961. He went on to attend Eastern Michigan University and Wayne State University.
Mike was a man of deep faith and an active member of the Church of the Resurrection. His commitment to his church and community was evident in his numerous volunteer activities, including playing the organ and piano at Sparrow Hospital to uplift patients and staff with music. Mike also had a remarkable green thumb, volunteering to landscape for his neighborhood and enjoying gardening at home. He was also a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus with the Lansing Assembly #3334 for over thirty years.
He was a wonderful, loving, and genuine individual, known for his spirited discussions on politics with friends and his dedication to his faith and Jesus Christ.
Mike is survived by his son, Michael Joseph Gillenkirk Jr.; sister, Joyce Miller of Toledo, OH; brother, Robert "Bob" Gillenkirk of Archer, FL; nephews Ken Miller, Daniel Miller, both of Toledo, OH, David Miller of Frisco, TX, and Shawn Crockett of Monroe, MI; nieces Jeanette Vanderputten of Archer, FL, Cynthia Gillenkirk-Steanhouse of Archer, FL, Denise Webb of Newport, MI; his grandchildren, Mya Gillenkirk, Jasmyn Gillenkirk, and Jalen Gillenkirk; and Jeff Gwynn of Manton, MI, husband of the late Linda. He also leaves behind many great-nieces and nephews. Mike was preceded in death by his ex-wife and mother of his son, Gail Dean; his sister Linda Katherine Anne Gwynn; and Joyce's husband, Michael Miller.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am Saturday, July 13, 2024 at St. Therese Catholic Church. Family will be accepting guests for a visitation an hour prior. The Rite of Committal will take place at Mt. Hope Cemetery following the service.
