On Saturday, October 11, 2025, Sandra passed peacefully, surrounded by family, after a long, hard battle with cancer and COPD. Sandra was born on November 14, 1948, in Lansing, MI, to John and Nessie Powell. She finished her schooling by obtaining her GED and later attended LCC to obtain a dental assistant degree. She got into waitressing, car hopping at Big Boy, where she met her first husband, Rick Hooper. She later had three boys, Jerry, Troy, and Adem Hooper. After the passing of her first husband and winning her battle to breast cancer in 1987, she found herself falling in love once again. After a long courtship, she later married Elvis Woods (Woody).
Sandra was a warm-hearted woman who always put her family first. She enjoyed spending time with the family, especially around the holidays. Her favorite was Christmas and having the family all together at her house for dinner and presents. She baked cookies for everyone to enjoy and made lots of crafts. She enjoyed “Junkin” at the local thrift stores. She was the one you could always call, and she would offer a listening ear and wasn’t afraid to give you the advice you needed. When asked, her sons would describe her as “a kind, caring, giving, and outgoing mom that always had time for you.”
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Nessie Powell; siblings, Eddie, Joyce, and Brenda; first husband, Rick Hooper; second husband, Elvis C. Woods (Woody); and son, Troy Hooper. She is survived by her sister, Carolyn; her sons, Jerry (Traci) Hooper and Adem (Angel) Hooper; her grandkids, Rachel (John) Catton, Corey (Brittney) Hooper, and Keith Donley; and her great-grandkids, Grace, LeeAnn, Savanah, and Hope, along with many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Gorsline-Runciman Tiffany Chapel at 3232 West Saginaw Street, Lansing, MI, 48917, on October 25th, 2025, from 1:00 pm-5:00 pm. A small service to share memories will begin at 2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her name to Eaton Community Palliative Care at 2675 S. Cochran Rd, Charlotte, MI 48813.
Sandra’s kindness and laughter will remain forever in the hearts of those who loved her.
