Velva Jean Ritter

She was born in Flintstone, Georgia, to Ray and Maggie Oliver.

Velva devoted much of her career to serving others as a social worker with Capital Area Community Services, where she was instrumental in starting a number of programs designed to improve the lives of those in need. Her work touched countless individuals and families, and her legacy of service will continue through the programs she helped shape.

She cherished simple joys, especially spending time with friends playing cards, where her gentle humor and warmth made everyone feel welcome. Those who knew Velva often described her as compassionate, caring, and gentle, but undeniably strong. A close friend once called her “a quiet woman with a rod of steel inside her."

Velva is survived by her beloved children, Debi (Mike) Adair, Steve (Jill) Ritter, Mike (Carolyn) Horton, Linda Wickman, Linda (Joe) Sullivan, Lissa (Steve) Horton, Greg (Teri) Horton, and Krissy (Todd) Ritter. She is also lovingly remembered by her thirteen grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; fifteen great-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-great-grandchild. She is preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Ritter; her son, Rick Horton; granddaughter, Starr Fox; great-granddaughter, Angel; three brothers; two sisters; and her parents.

She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, resilience, and quiet wisdom. Anyone who met her felt heard, valued, and cared for. Her presence brought comfort and her love brought peace. Her family and friends will forever carry her strength and tenderness in their hearts.

A Celebration of Velva's Life will take place on December 7, 2025 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Grand Ledge Opera House, 121 S Bridge St., Grand Ledge, MI 48837.
