2021. She was born in Connorville, Ohio. She married Edward Mekis in Cleveland, Ohio, and
they began their family there. After Ed was transferred to Detroit, the family moved to Michigan.
In 1992, Ed and Lee moved to Florida to care for Lee’s aging parents.
Lee was an active member of St. Jerome Catholic Church in Largo, Florida. She brought Holy
Communion to those unable to attend church, and developed rich, long-lasting relationships with
them and their families. Lee felt honored to serve her church community as a member of the Altar
Society.
An avid bridge player, Lee exulted when she came in first place at her weekly bridge group. She
was a sports fan, keeping up with Tampa Bay Rays as well as college football teams.
The outdoors rejuvenated Lee. She enjoyed family vacations at Elk and Torch Lakes where she
could swim and immerse herself in nature. She loved Indian Rocks beach. Her two-mile beach
walks included beachcombing and sharing her finds with others, swimming in the Gulf, watching
the sunset until the stars appeared then identifying the constellations. She loved to learn and she
shared her sense of wonder of the natural world with those she loved.
Lee was an excellent cook. Many of her home-cooked meals originated from Hungary, Italy, and
Poland. She particularly enjoyed baking and made a memorable Baked Alaska for holidays.
Lee was preceded in death by her loving husband of 60 years, Edward (2011), and her daughter,
Carol Connor (2008). She is survived by her brother, Calvin Skeid; her children, Chris (Ricke)
Stauffer, Debbie (Tom) Johnson, Susan (Kevin) Payne and John (Katherine) Mekis;
grandchildren Ricke (Charity) Stauffer, Jr., Matthew Stauffer, Johannes Stauffer, Abigail
Stauffer, Miriam Johnson, Martha (Brian Moore) Johnson, Joseph Mekis and Jozsua Mekis; and
six great-grandchildren.
