Memory of my Grandma

She was in her seventies.
Who wore a pink dress.
Who loved looking good all the time.
Who always says "is that food good?"
 
Who always told me that she loved me.
Who has a sweet voice and a pretty smile.
Who loved sports and to read.
 
Who loved everyone.
Who was friendly, nice and a people person.
Who used to play board games with me.
Who sent me birthdays cards and other holiday cards.
Until she got sick and died.

My prayers and best wishes go to you and those whose hearts ache at this great loss. I am reminded of the Bible scripture that says 'to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.' Take comfort in this.  I recall fondly our days at Pinellas Park Middle as fellow Language Arts teachers. There were some challenging days, but Shirley came every day ready to make a difference in students' lives.  May God be with you and give you strength for this leg of the journey.

Shirley at the Table

I first met Jim and Shirley about nine years ago when Molly and I started dating.  We weren't telling yet, but I was soon to be one of the family.  So I greeted Shirley that first time with a familial hug and a kiss.  It sort of surprised her and if it was a little bit forward, she didn't seem to mind.  We never talked about it really, but after that day every time I greeted her or said goodbye, I sort of felt like she expected it from me; that she'd be disappointed if she didn't get her hug and kiss.

If there's one lasting vision I have of Shirley, it's walking inside the back door and seeing her at the kitchen table.  That was her whole world in a way - reading the newspaper or a book, enjoying a snack or a drink, watching the Bucs.  But she'd be in her chair and would turn to greet me.

Shirley at the table epitomizes the simplicity I adored about her and found so admirable.  She wasn't naive.  Despite her immobility, she just reveled in the pleasures she had.  By any measure, simple things.  She was smart like a whip and tough as nails, and you'd never know it.  She never complained and wouldn't allow you to feel sorry for her.  Shirley had pride.  And she would have laughed if you told her, but even in the simple life forced upon her, Shirley had grace.

Dear Jim, we have so many fond memories of Shirley as we were growing up. She was part of our family and will always be in our hearts. She was a dear and loving person and we were lucky to have the time spent with her.

Dear Jim and Family,  I am thinking of you and sending my deepest sympathy.  I have very fond memories of Shirley during our Language Arts days at PPMS.  I can see her smiling face and wonderful laugh!!!  We had some memorable lunch times together.  She was always so proud of her family and we could see the love she had for you, Jim. Uncle Jim, Sally, Patrick, Michael and Molly, we are saddened to hear of Aunt Shirley's passing.  I know how hard it is, as we just laid daddy to rest.
