Delbert G. “Gene” Watkins, 90, of Las Vegas, Nevada, passed away peacefully on January 19, 2026. A devoted husband, loving father, and steadfast friend, Gene will be remembered for his quiet strength, disciplined spirit, and generous heart—always ready to lend a hand to anyone in need.
Born on July 31, 1935, in Prague, Oklahoma, Gene was the beloved son of Marion and Roxie Watkins. When he was in the fifth grade, his father moved the family west to Wilmington, California. He learned early the importance of hard work, self-reliance and perseverance—values that would stay with him throughout his life and that he passed on to his children. He began his career as a driver for the Bekins Moving Company, steadily working his way up through the industry with dedication and determination. He was the President of Global Van Lines in the early 80s and was a partner in two Global agencies until his retirement in 1987,
On a personal level, Gene’s life was defined by love and family. For 73 years, he was devoted to his high-school sweetheart, Mary Ann Watkins (Evans), with whom he built a life of trust, laughter, and companionship. Together, they weathered life’s challenges and celebrated its joys, leaving a legacy of love that continues through their children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Gene was a family man and there was nothing he wouldn’t do for his family. He is survived by his wife and high-school sweetheart, Mary Ann who he has been married for 73 years; daughters Jean Ann Schmidt (Dana), Janet Wilson, Lorrie Poland (Clyde), his son, Loren Watkins; and his sister, Janice Jackson. He was preceded in death by his son, Stanley Watkins; his parents, Roxie and Marion Watkins; and his sister, Charlene Jackson as well as many grandchildren & great-grandchildren.
Sports of all types was Gene’s lifelong passion. He was a life-long Dodgers fan and particular enjoyed golf upon his retirement. He loved playing golf weekly with his friends and practicing his swing at the driving range. Like every challenge in life, he studied golf and practiced to be the best he could be at the game, earning the nickname “Gene the Breeze”. Gene’s disciplined approach to everything he did inspired those around him to meet life’s challenges head-on with strength and integrity. He was always a gentleman both on and off the golf course.
For the past four years, Gene had lived in a memory-care facility due to progressed dementia. Although he wasn’t able to visit with his friends any longer, he knew that he was loved by all who knew him but none more than by his wife & children. Private services for his immediate family were held to honor Gene’s life. Final interment was at Palm Cemetery in Las Vegas, NV.
