

Edelmira Fernandez, 88 a homemaker, of Las Vegas, passed away Sept. 20, 2011. She was born Sept. 27, 1922, in Havana, Cuba, to Juan Salord and Francisca Piris de Salord, both originally of Menorca, Spain, and was a 49-year resident of Nevada. Edelmira was a much-loved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be remembered for her beauty, strength and generosity. She married Dr. Emilio A. Fernandez, July 1, 1948, and they remained together for 43 years until his passing in 1991. After immigrating to the United States in 1962, she lived in Las Vegas, and enjoyed cooking, traveling, nurturing her grandchildren, financially supporting a number of local and national charities and watching Spanish soaps on TV. She was a devoted member of Our Lady of Charity Association at St. Anne's Catholic Church. Edelmira was preceded in death by her five sisters, Margarita Diaz, Gabriela Salord, Francisca Perez, Ondina Rodriguez and Yolanda Prado; and granddaughter, Michelle Brekke. Edelmira is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Emilio and Maria Fernandez; daughter, Edelmira Brekke; daughter and son-in-law, Carmen and Vincent Ciminise, all of Las Vegas; seven grandchildren; and one newly-born great-grandson of Japan. Edelmira will definitely be missed by all. Viewing will be 2-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, with a Rosary at 5:30 p.m., both at Palm Mortuary, 7600 S. Eastern Ave. Funeral Mass will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 23, at St. Anne's Catholic Church, 1901 S. Maryland Parkway. Entombment following church services. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked donations be made in Edelmira's name to Nathan Adelson Hospice.
