“Herbie,” as he was known by friends and family, will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 34 years, Rivkah (nee Saidian) of Las Vegas, niece and nephew Beth (Richard), Ross and great nieces Morgan and Rachel. He was preceded in death by his father, Jacob “Jack,” mother, Gladys (nee Goldberg) and brother, Fred.
Herbie was born on February 22, 1939 in Philadelphia, PA. He was raised on Wyoming Avenue in Philadelphia. At an early age he showed artistic talent, even having some of his childhood work displayed at Gimbel’s Department store during an art exhibition.
Herbie began working in the family food business at a young age, eventually leaving to work for Food Fair as a produce buyer. In the evenings, he attended college to obtain a business degree. In 1970, he rejoined the family business as the president of Froots N’ Things Ltd, which had locations in Philadelphia, PA.
Herbie loved flowers. His artistic talent shone through in his flower arrangements, which became one of the hallmarks of Froots N’ Things on South Street in Philadelphia, where the storefront was filled with the luminous colors of tulips, roses and birds of paradise. Customers were drawn by the beauty of the windows and the quality of the food, but they returned for the company of Herbie, his younger brother Fred, and father Jack, who made the store a place where people could unload their worries and have great conversation.
In the early 1980’s, Herbie met Rivkah, his bashert, at a casino in Atlantic City and they married in February of 1986. Herbie loved Rivkah dearly and often expressed how lucky he was to have her in his life. She was his loving wife, but also cared tirelessly for Jack until his passing in 1992.
Soon after, Herbie and Rivkah moved to Las Vegas. Herbie, who worked since he was a young boy, was delighted to have time to relax and, spend with family, friends and neighbors. His friendly smile and gentle demeanor endeared people to him. He was a generous, loving and sensitive soul who gave more than he took from the world. He will be greatly missed but his memory will live on in those who knew him.
