James Maurice Van Tatenhove, a man of profound faith, athletic prowess, and professional distinction, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2026 at the age of 96. Born November 12, 1929, on his family’s dairy farm in Plymouth, Wisconsin, Jim’s journey was defined by hard work and excellence.
A standout athlete and scholar, Jim balanced his studies at River Falls State Teachers College by playing trombone in a dance band and working in the cafeteria. He excelled in track and debate before marrying his lifelong love, Marilyn Sielaff, on December 31, 1950.
Jim served honorably in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, stationed at Pearl Harbor. Following his service, he earned an MBA from the University of Washington and began a storied career in finance. At North American Aviation, he led financial operations for the Apollo Program’s Space Division during the historic Lunar Mission era. He later held senior executive roles at Kaufman & Broad and Wickes Companies before forming a private consulting partnership.
Even in his 40s, Jim’s competitive spirit remained; he set American age-group records in the 800 and 1500-meter runs. His commitment to service was equally strong, serving on the boards of the Los Angeles Union Rescue Mission and Lutheran Bible Translators.
In 1995, Jim and Marilyn moved to Las Vegas, where they became founding members of Faith Community Lutheran Church. Jim served as its first president, overseeing the construction of the church’s Summerlin campus.
At the time of his death, Jim and Marilyn had been married over 75 years, a remarkable testament. Jim is survived by Marilyn, their three sons (Krin, Dirk, Hans), two daughters-in-law (Yolanda, Donna), four grandchildren (Pieter, Hanna, Danielle, Kristoffer) and three great-grandchildren (Lola, Cora, Evelyn).
Jim will be buried in the Southern Nevada State Veterans Cemetery in Boulder City, Nevada, followed by a memorial service at Faith Community Lutheran Church.
