Jason always had a way of putting a smile on my face . He would start the conversation with a cheesy joke or a corny one liner , that made me laugh every time. He loved his family more than life. I was his house cleaner and his actions and the way he spoke of his family showed his love for his kids and wife. I am so sorry for your  loss. Heaven gained an angel to watch over Leliana and Noah always . God Bless you all

Dear Swanger ( or Swanky as I used to call you),

My heart is aching knowing you're gone. Especially because I just found out..so late...I never got the chance to say goodbye to you and never got the chance to pay my respect to you on your funeral. I just saw you a few weeks ago at work and you seemed so full of life and so cheerful and well. It is hard for me to grasp the reality that you're no longer here with all of us. But just know, you'll never be forgotten as our academy graduation photo on my wall will be the constant reminder of how fortunate we all are to have known you. You rocked the 4th squad, and still to this day you made the best sound impressions of people eating (it came uplifting during breaks in the academy and I can't thank you enough.) I hope that your family will find peace in your departure knowing you're watching over them.

I was SO fortunate to be taken in by the best group of friends when I moved to San Diego in 2004; one of the kindest, funniest, most loyal guys I know with the biggest, loudest, most contagious laugh was among this group that became my SD family. Honestly, I was a little intimidated when I first met Jay (he was tall, loud, and didn’t hold back his thoughts), but he quickly became a dear friend and I have so many precious memories with him and my whole SD family that I will always treasure. 

We may not have done anything “grand”  together, but just being friends, having our weekly group dinners, playing countless rounds of rummy and sharing even more laughs together will always remain some of my most favorite memories.

Life has taken our SD family in various directions, and even though it’s been a handful of years since I last saw Jay, I still adored him, his beautiful family, and his friendship! I admittedly stink at keeping in touch, but I’ve loved seeing updates & family photos on social media over the years. I hate that I have mistakenly assumed that all of my friends will “always be there” ... I truly wish I had been better at keeping in touch. 

You are missed, my friend.

Our family saw the news of Jason’s passing on Facebook this morning. Two of us got quiet and one of us burst into tears. Jason was so much fun, we would roll through the stop sign when we saw him watching so we could stop and chat with him for way too long! He loved chatting with our daughter about the military and telling us stories about when he served our country.  He always had advice for her to make her military journey easier.  He was the first one to show up if we had a problem, and having him as a neighbor and friend brought us a sense of peace.  We are always looking for him when we drive through our neighborhood, and something tells me we still will be asking each other when we drive by a police cruiser, “Is that Jason?” We are grateful for the chats we had with him and the time we got to know him. He was a great guy who loved his family, his country, and his career.  Christa we love you and we are so sorry for your loss.  Sending love and prayers to you and your family.

It’s hard to believe that few days ago he was sitting at briefing among all of us.  And the next day he is gone. 
It still feels unreal and it will be for a long time. 
There will forever be an empty chair that will remind us of him, never forgotten, always in our heart.

I knew Jason from our time at South Central as well as Enterprise Area Commands.  As a supervisor in both areas, I saw Jason’s heart for people first hand.  He always took the time to listen and assist people any way he could.  He encouraged others and treated everyone with dignity and respect.  He didn’t dodged calls and worked the streets with passion and enthusiasm.   
I’ll never forget the time the wash flooded at Swenson and Flamingo a few years back.  FD could not convince the homeless to exit the wash despite rising  flood waters. Swanger took it upon himself to insist they exit for their safety. He got completely soaked in his effort.  Afterwards we all had a good chuckle on how our wool uniform pants shrink when wet! I’m convinced to this day If he had swift water rescue gear he’d gone in the water himself to clear the tunnel.  I will always remember Swanger as a funny character with a big heart.  He will truly be missed.   

In reading jason’s memorial, his description fits exactly with my own personal experiences with him; feeling safe and protected, able to turn frowns into smiles and laughs, but most of all,  a sense of humor combined with compassion that turned an entirely difficult day into a good day.  Having known jason and his family throughout the years, its notable what an honorable and devoted husband, father, and family  man he truly was.  Again, to say he was “a man among men” is a phrase i can use for very few others, but it certainly fit jason.  His concern, involvement, both emotional as well as physical, willingness to step up for any need, for any family  member or friend,  was exceptional.  He could use his “one-liners” in one moment, yet be sensitive and tender the next - truly a gem. 
To lose jason, such a strong yet compassionate person, with such love and devotion for his family and community, a genuine and sincerely kind-hearted man, is a loss beyond words.  God bless him, his memory, his family, and the many who loved him.  🙏

I’m deeply saddened to hear of Jasons passing. We were in the same academy together and had many conversations throughout. Jason cared about his family very much and genuinely cared about people. Jason was always very kind to me and I will forever remember that. My deepest condolences to his family. Rest easy, Jason.

Jason was always a dedicated father.  He would always volunteer to read books to Noah's preschool class.   He adored Noah and Noah absolutely adored his dad.  From our hearts please accept our deepest condolences! You are forever in our hearts.

The way I best describe Jay is a Character with Character!!
There was no question that you felt his presence  in a room, both physically & spiritually. What I always did and always will remember and admire immensely about Jay is when he married into our family,he came in and committed to all of us! Always made time for me, my wife and my grandson.If we ever needed his help in any way no hesitation...

I was so shocked and saddened by hearing the passing of Jason. I met this wonderful family when Noah started Preschool where I worked.  As soon as I met Noah and his family I grew an immediate bond and connection with them as if they were part of my own. My heart goes out to the Swanger Family, they have been in my thoughts and prayers.  🙏❤️

Jason is probably the funniest guy I’ve had to pleasure to know. He really does have the best one-liners. What I will remember most about Jay though is his sincerity. He is truly the most genuine and sincere person. So caring and thoughtful. He always, always, always asked how Alyssa was doing and always wanted an update so he could keep her in his prayers. Jason is a Man of God. He was our friend. I love how much he loved our Christa and Noah and Leilani. The world and our lives is better because we got to share it with him. We love you Jason!!! I met the Swanger family when Noah attended the preschool I worked at.  Jason was always so nice and had a great sense of humor.  Noah was such a sweet boy , (my favorite , I cried when he graduated) . And I know how much Noah wanted to be like his daddy! Jason was a great role model ! I Remember Noah telling me he wanted to be a police officer like his daddy!  My heart goes out to you and your family ! 

I’m in shock over his passing. He was larger than life and his laugh was one of a kind. I was lucky to have met and served in the Navy with him onboard the USS John C. Stennis. A great man for sure. Praying for his family and friends. Love and light. 🙏🏼😇
