Jo Oliveri passed peacefully on July 3, 2023, at her home in Las Vegas, Nevada, surrounded by her family, and on her favorite day of the week. She was born on a Monday, got married on a Monday, and went out with a bang on a Monday while fireworks lit the sky in celebration of the big and bold life she had lived.
Jo was born on May 16th, 1960, in Kansas City, Kansas to Nancy (Ramage) and Joe McGavic. Her deep-rooted nomadic lifestyle started at birth in thanks to her father’s career with General Electric. She had a transient upbringing around the southern United States before the family eventually settled in Atlanta, Georgia where she graduated high school. She then graduated from Georgia State University in 1982 with a degree in accounting and relocated to Texas where she received her C.P.A.; an accreditation that she kept with her for the entirety of her life. After a series of jobs that took her around the world, she landed an internal auditing job at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport where she met her then-current auditee and eventual husband, Anthony (Tony) Oliveri. After tying the knot at that same airport on 8/8/88, Jo and Tony continued with the nomadic lifestyle; moving from Texas to Colorado to Georgia and finally to Las Vegas, Nevada with pit stops in Australia, Pennsylvania, Texas, and what seemed like every other corner of the world. Along the way she took on the best role of her career, being a mom. She went above and beyond in this role, giving her motherly love and advice to anyone she thought needed it, and held up an “I love you” sign for her own kids every chance she could.
Her interests included traveling the world with her husband, being anywhere outdoors with a book, and knitting toys for her grandpets. After several years of cheering her kids on from the sidelines, she fell in love with sports and became an avid fan of the Kansas City Chiefs and Vegas Golden Knights. She died happy knowing that both of her teams won their 2023 championships. She loved adventure and would go anywhere and everywhere as long as her feet were on the ground and her head above water.
Jo is survived by her husband, Tony Oliveri; her son, Alex Oliveri; her daughter, Nicole Oliveri; her soon-to-be-son-in-law, Gary Cook; her sister, Jan Norton; her nieces and nephew, Susan Helm, Charlie Norton, Lauren Wittnebel, Sarah Kunkel; and her grandpets, Luci, Cannoli, and Jack.
Her celebration of life will be held at Palm Southwest Mortuary located at 7979 W Warm Springs Rd, Las Vegas, NV 89113 on Friday, July 21st at 1pm. Jo’s favorite drinks, desserts, and board games to follow at the Oliveri house in Las Vegas. Friends and family are welcome to attend, and her family’s only request is that you wear your brightest flowers instead of black (which is a bad idea in Las Vegas in July anyway). In lieu of flowers and in honor of her final resting place along the Appalachian Trail, please plant a tree along the trail in her memory here: https://shop.alivingtribute.org/products/appalachians
