

Justino Bermodez passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 20, 2024 at his home in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was born on November 13, 1934 in Kekaha, Kaua'i, to Isidro Bermodez and Hermelina Tugade-Bermodez. He is a graduate of Waimea High School where he was a star football player.
Justino served 30 years in the United States Army in the 101st Airborne reaching the rank of Command Sergeant Major. During his time in the Army, he trained troops in hand-to-hand combat and was a former boxer. Over the years, he was awarded the Legion of Merit and was a recipient of a Bronze Star Medal, to name a few. He retired in 1986, where he then started his career in the United States Postal Service working at the Pearl City Post Office for the next 20 years of his life. During his time, Justino also went back to school at the University of Hawaii and he graduated with his degree in Liberal Arts.
Justino had a number of hobbies and loved being near the water. He loved diving, swimming, and fishing, and he also loved going fruit picking. Justino was also a Black Belt Instructor in Judo, Karate, and Taekwondo. While in Wai’anae, he was a member of the Methodist Church of Wai’anae.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years whom he adored, Myong Bermodez; his children, Melanie Franco (Bobby Franco), Justin Bermodez, and Penelope O (Joe O); his grandchildren, Ransen Kunukau, Destiny McLemore (Jarrod McLemore), Jeremy Bermodez, Jaylynn Peters (Dane Peters), Brenner Franco, Audrey O, and JJ O; great-grandchildren Zaiston Bermodez-Peters and Xailacee Peters; and a host of nieces and nephews to cherish his memory.
