It is with sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Renee Komito Sussmann, beloved by all who knew her. Over the course of her 97 years, she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and dear friend.
Renee passed away peacefully in her own bed, supported by her doting son Bruce in her last days, and devoted caregiver Albert, and with daughter Beth arriving to be by her side in the final hours. She was born on September 26, 1927, in Cleveland Ohio. Renee and sister Joan were raised by their dedicated parents, Nathaniel and Jeanette Freiberger, surrounded by the many aunts, uncles and cousins who all lived in Cleveland. She married her high school sweetheart, Milton, at the age of 18 as they were both beginning their college years and right after he joined the army. Luckily he was stationed in the US so they were never parted for long.
After the war, while living in Washington DC, Bruce was born and 4 years later, in Parkersburg West Virginia, Beth joined the family. A few years later they moved to Akron, Ohio, happy to be in close proximity to their families in Cleveland. Toward the end of her kids’ childhoods, Renee continued her college education and became a special education teacher.
Some time after her first marriage ended, while living in Alexandria, Virginia, Renee met Ernie Sussmann and they were married in 1987. They enjoyed life together, establishing a home in Las Vegas often travelling with Bruce and daughter-in-law Mimi. She especially loved spending time with her 3 grandchildren all of whom she was tremendously proud. Renee also cultivated and enjoyed life long friendships with those she met in the various places she lived, but among the most precious were those she formed living at Las Ventanas seniors’ community in Las Vegas. She will be deeply missed by her friends at the dinner table, and playing “ Rummikub”. Her kindness, zest for life, and beautiful smile will be missed by all.
Renee is survived by her cherished children, Bruce (Mimi) Komito and Beth Komito-Gottlieb; and much loved 3 grandchildren, Emma Gottlieb, Toby Gottlieb ( Marli Bennett), and Elisabeth Komito (Owen Poole); as well as stepdaughters Susan (Russel), Penny (David) & their children Matthew, Jason, Allison, Mark, and Rachel. A funeral service will be held at Boulder City Veterans cemetery on April 16, 2025. In Lieu of flowers, contributions in Renee’s memory can be made to the Las Ventanas Benevolent Fund or Israel Guide Dog Center – USA 968 Easton Road, Suite H Warrington, PA 18976, USA Tel: +1-215-343-9100 | Email: [email protected] | www.israelguidedog.org OR Canadian Friends of the Israel Guide Dog Center 4600 Bathurst Street 4th Floor Library Toronto, ON M2R 3V2,Canada T: +1- 416.849.3136 | [email protected] | www.israelguidedog.ca
